Bye-bye fracking.

Fracking will be a strategic resource for the US from now on. We leave our oil in the ground as a threat to other nations from trying to price gouge us. Jack up the price, and we flood the market with fracked oil.

The threat alone means Russia and Saudia Arabia use their finite resources while we keep ours in the ground.

Thanks Obama!

I think Saudi sees a desperate chance to throw a dagger into non-OPEC (read USA) oil. Knowing the market was already in for a rocky road for the next months/year+ they figure they have enough resources to ride it out while potentially killing a very serious competitor.

Russia's motive is locking out US LNG. As fracking slows, so will US NG production.

They may still be pissed that the US was successful at stopping Nordstream 2.

The thingnis, Russia and SA will suffer more than the US, yes we will sell less oil as the price is gone, but like Dukhat pointed out its a strategic resource, we. Will keep the rigs.

So we get the benefit of cheap oil ( traditionally a boon for the US) as soon as the war is over we turn the pumps back on.

The US is diverse economy. Much more so than SA and Russia.

China will benefit from this to while it gets back to work.

Tc, The US is better situated to handle fluctuations in oil than most other oil producing nations.

60% of Russian exports and 1/3 of the GDP are from energy.

In the US its 8% of the GDP.

Russia can't withstand a long price war on oil.

This would be a good time for the US to top off the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Saudi oil is cheaper to refine than US crude so the US can take advantage of prices to refine imported oil and stockpile US oil.
The US has also been kicking around the idea of an emergency stockpile of refined fuels. Smaller companies that have most their eggs in the fracking industry are likely going to be bought on the cheap by larger companies that can absorb some loss. Fracking will drop in production. This can be offset if the government decides to stockpile refined fuels as jobs would shift from one area to the other. Overall the energy sector should come out okay but the downside is the loss of small and medium sized businesses along the way.

Not all destillates store well. A huge problem that I see is the disruption is hitting unevenly and you do not actually get to decide how oil fractions.

Ie aviation fuel consumption down more than gasoline.
