The virus doesn't care about how rich you are or what your politics are.

If Tom get's sick, he'll need oxygen, medication, and probably a ventilator. He might need more intensive management if he develops lung scarring.

These are tools even third-world hospitals have. It's the same as treating a very bad case of the flu or any other viral pneumonia.

You should wear a face mask when you interact with anyone especially crowds or people with the highest risk:

This is not a political issue when it affects you and your families.

Stay safe, slow the spread to help all the healthcare workers who will be swamped in the coming weeks.

The rest of world new cases is now higher than any single given day in China save the one were symptombased criteria were used instead of tests in reporting the number of cases.

7.5k might seem like a lot today. But give it 5 days. Then 15k day will seem like a lot and 7.5 not so much.

Its not medical supplies. Its assisted breathing slots. The reason capacity cannot be surged is lack of personnel.

New Puplic Management. No redundant capacity. No surge capacity. Health care was better able to surge to meet the demands of the Spanish Flu.

A cure has been found, although I know that you infidels will not use it.
(btw. this would also have cured Aeros, but he is no longer among us?)

http://www...s-for-coronavirus-in-iran.html

Amid anxieties in Iran over the coronavirus outbreak and a flurry of precautions to prevent its spread, a controversial ayatollah has declared a new method to “cure” the virus: applying violet oil to the anus.

Abbas Tabrizian, described by his supporters as “the father of Islamic medicine of Iran,” began focusing on “Islamic medicine” when his wife was diagnosed with cancer. Although doctors had given up hope on her, Tabrizian said he was able to cure her after “a short treatment he devised,” according to a website affiliated with the cleric. The Najaf-born cleric studied at the prestigious seminary in the same city, the website said.

Even before his unorthodox prescription for COVID-19, the cleric was under fire from his counterparts and other religious figures, including Grand Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi-Amoli and Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi, in the holy city of Qom, the heart of the Shiite sect. They refuted Tabrizian's claims regarding the superiority of "Islamic medicine," arguing there is no such thing.

In January, Tabrizian burned a copy of “Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine,” an American reference book. “This book was a tool for the West's infiltration of other countries,” Tabrizian explained in a Jan. 26 video. He said that Westerners had, throughout history, set fire to “The Canon of Medicine," by Iranian philosopher and physician Avicenna, but failed to specify when and where this had happened. Tabrizian also offered to hold classes for physicians to teach them Islamic medicine and his formulas.

US does not have a system in place to test like foreign countries, lawmakers told

From CNN's Manu Raju

Several members emerged from a House briefing on the coronavirus pandemic saying that they were told that tests would increase — but that the briefers acknowledged that the US system is trying to catch up to other countries like South Korea.

“I don’t think anyone is going to leave that briefing satisfied with what’s going on with testing right now," Democrat Rep. Mike Quigley said. "Bottom line, you leave that briefing and we are not where we need to be and not sure when we are going to get there. We are flying blind.”

He added: “I think the first thing they said was we don’t have a system that works like it does in other countries to adequately test at this time."

Rep. Jan Schawkowsky said that they were told 7,300 tests have been conducted by the public sector and 3,800 tests by private labs.

“I think everyone leaving that briefing is feeling more confused than ever and disappointed in the numbers that we heard — that we really don’t have a system that tests are being distributed and tests are being given,” Schakowsky said

Coronavirus response hurt by lack of funding for public health labs, CDC director tells Congress

Lack of funding has hampered the federal government’s response to the coronavirus outbreak, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told lawmakers Tuesday.

The hearing in the House was originally intended to address concerns about the CDC’s 2021 budget. But lawmakers’ questions for Director Robert Redfield focused more specifically on the outbreak, particularly regarding the slow rollout of tests across the country.

“The truth is we’ve underinvested in the public health labs,” Redfield told them

The tests were initially marred by quality control issues, delaying testing for Americans who were or thought they were infected and prompting some states such as New York to seek emergency approval to use their own test kits.

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., was among the lawmakers who questioned Redfield on this point. She noted that her congressional colleagues were able to quickly obtain tests and results, while some of her constituents in Washington, one of the states hardest hit by coronavirus, were still waiting.

“I find it interesting that when my colleagues,” she said, “were able to get tested almost immediately and quickly receive their results while folks in my district and across Washington state are unable to get their testing results back.”

Already, 23 have died in Washington, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. At least 19 of those deaths can be linked to the Life Care residential home in Kirkland, according to local official tallies.

Redfield blamed the lack of adequate funding and resources. “There’s not enough equipment, there’s not enough people, there’s not enough internal capacity, there’s no search capacity,” he said.

During the hearing Redfield was also pressed on the CDC’s failure to update its website with the number of people being tested every day.

“Why are we only updating the CDC website now three days a week?” asked Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis. “World Health Organization does it daily. This is information people really want to know.”

You can sort the table on this side for cases per 1M population. Suddenly many countries look worse than Germany:
http://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Maybe that's why Norway is locking down (jergul I want a live report!):
http://www.lifeinnorway.net/norway-is-closed-coronavirus/

Millions of Norwegians and foreigners living in or visiting Norway will be impacted by a drastic set of measures announced by Erna Solberg today. Norway is essentially shutting itself down for two weeks, in a bid to stop the rapid spread of the coronavirus and COVID-19 disease.

More than 700 people have been infected in Norway, a number that has drastically increased in the last 48 hours. Although at the time of writing no-one has yet died in Norway from the disease, the country's leaders say this is inevitable.

Read more: Coronavirus in Norway

All schools, kindergartens and universities are to close. Most public events are banned. Bars and restaurants will be closed. Most relevant to readers of Life in Norway is perhaps the most dramatic measure of all. Anyone who has traveled outside the Nordic countries since 27 February should be home quarantined for 14 days.

Which probably means schools will be closed next week.

Grocery stores on the island have been rocked. Areas with the most immigrants have been rocked the hardest: theyre not used to being able to stockpile I guess, or used to the lack of scarcity.

But we've sold like stupid amounts of paper (Kleenex, toilet paper, etc). Just stupid amounts. Entire aisle has been emptied two days in a row.

Supposedly Health Canada has also taken measures to stockpile supplies by freezing supply chains.

UK is using an unusual strategy. They're focused entirely on mitigation now. Basically let it slowly infect the population so that its manageable in terms of peak cases and also build up immunity in the population.

Reading the scientific literature on it is interesting. So basically instead of always quarantining yourself for 14 days when you travel somewhere, you just live life normal and if you have symptoms go home for 7 days and then come back. Those 7 days when you have symptoms you are most contagious so they want to just bend the curve as much they can so its manageable while building up immunity in the population so they can return life to normal.

Interesting. We'll see how that works in Britain and for China since CHina did the opposite and did massive containment and will probably face another outbreak from foreign visitors in a few weeks.

We should CLOSE our borders for Brits at once:

80% infected soon!
500000 dead soon!

And only because UK has not banned Chinese Huawei on its soil.

http://www...elay-phase-of-coronavirus-plan

Britain moved from the “contain” phase of the crisis to the “delay” phase on Thursday, when the death toll for UK citizens was at 12, two of them having died overseas, and the official number of infected people reached 590.

However, speaking after Thursday’s emergency Cobra meeting, the government’s chief scientific officer, Sir Patrick Vallance, said the true total was likely to be between 5,000 and 10,000. He said 20 people were being treated for Covid-19 in intensive care units and that the UK was on a trajectory about four weeks behind that of Italy, which has had more than 1,000 deaths.

Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer, said that worst-case scenario planning projected that 80% of the country would contract the virus, with a 1% mortality rate. This equates to more than 500,000 deaths.

Jergul, I wasn't attacking, genuine concern.

Trumps hasn't done enough, that I agree with. However No western nation has. Norway seems to have been doing better than the EU/US.

But its early on , it could dbe in 2 months that the stock market is back up and the virus is gone, or we could be a collapsed nation to early to tell, break out some universes.
Wrath of Orion
Member
Fri Mar 13 11:48:38
Fucking christ, the nation is not going to collapse in two months. But this also isn't going to be gone in two months.

The best methodology now is to mitigate to dampen the infection curve to prevent the health care system from becoming totally swamped (which drastically increases mortality rates).

Widespread testing needed to happen a couple weeks ago, but we still need it now and in the future. People need to to have changed their daily routines a couple weeks ago, but we still need it now and in the future.

This will not "go away" until a vaccine is developed - 1 to 1.5 years probably. Once the infection curve is dampened and people get used to this, things will normalize. But we're not there yet, not even close - it has been completely bungled.
Wrath of Orion
Member
Fri Mar 13 11:50:28
As time goes on, more people will gain immunity and we'll start seeing hotspots pop up again instead of exponential growth (which is what is going on now and will be for a while). We still need to be mitigating at that point, but THEN localized containment once again becomes possible and feasible.

This isn't fucking rocket science, but you wouldn't know that by looking at our government, lol.

Wrath of Orion

Yes hood, that's true, but honestly not realistic. This country really has no idea how to deal with a true pandemic, and it is very resistant to learning.

The only realistic chance for this to start up was 2-3 weeks ago with a competent government. But even then, culture and ignorance in the US is such that even a competent government probably wouldn't have been enough unless lockdowns were imposed. And that just doesn't fly here.

So really, it's not just the government's fault, but also the general culture and system in the US. I'd like to hope people will learn after this, but I really doubt it.
Wrath of Orion
Member
Fri Mar 13 11:57:45
Other countries do have some of these issues, too, but they will also have an easier time dampening the infection curve. They also don't have the resources that the US should have been able to bring to focus against this. Hence the deserved criticism for the US over other countries.

I do not see how the US can control this. 10s of millions underinsured, 10s of millions underinsured, and 10s of millions without the benefit of paid sick leave.

Containment asks too much of these individuals for very little personal benefit (the individual risk for people without access to medicare is actually quite low).

This from Trumps speech fact checked:

(CNN)During his press conference Friday declaring a national emergency to address the coronavirus and release $50 billion in federal funding, President Donald Trump criticized President Barack Obama's administration for its handling of the swine flu (H1N1 virus) in 2009.

"If you go back to the swine flu, it was nothing like this," Trump said. "They didn't do testing like this. And actually they lost approximately 14,000 people and they didn't do the testing. They started thinking about testing when it was far too late."
Facts First: Trump is wrong. The CDC did focus on testing -- conducting 5,000 tests in the first month and sending out a total of 1 million tests in the first five months of the outbreak.
The CDC's summary report of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic outlines how tests were administered at the time. The virus was first detected in the US on April 15. The CDC informed the World Health Organization about initial cases April 18. A test to detect this strain of swine flu was developed by the CDC and cleared for use 10 days later, on April 28, and the CDC began shipping tests across the US and around the world on May 1.
Within the next four months, more than 1 million tests "were shipped to 120 domestic and 250 international laboratories in 140 countries," according to the CDC's report.
By May 18, 40 states were authorized to conduct their own 2009 H1N1 testing, with eight states having multiple laboratories that could process the tests, the report says.
Between April 12, 2009 and April 10, 2010, the CDC estimates that the swine flu killed 12,469 people in the US.
The first case of coronavirus was confirmed in the US on January 20 of this year. As of Wednesday, almost two months later, 11,079 specimens had been tested in the US.

Three months sounds about right.

We aren't nowhere near testing enough people which is necessary to start containing this. It'll take about 2 weeks for testing to ramp up and then 2 weeks more for it to make a dent in the numbers and slow the thing.

The hospitalizations and deaths follow about 3-4 weeks after diagnosis so that's a timeline of about 2 months at best when we finally start getting a handle on this, maybe 3 months if they fucking bungle it up some more.

Markets will start to calm down when the growth in new cases slows and stabilizes. And it will bottom out when the growth in deaths stabilizes and decreases the month afterwards.

So we're looking at maybe mid-June when this thing is no longer scary-looking.

I hope to god that it's not that bad though and that hot weather slows this thing down.

We should be going to China or Germany hat-in-hand for them to send us as many ventilators as they can. It's going to get bad.

I think Republicans are going to want to impeach Trump right away if he fails to meet even this timeline. He'll be such a fucking liability and the country will be so desperate that they'll cut their losses.

And knowing Trump, he's fucking stupid enough to mess it up even more.

No way for that to play out. If that is the sentiment, then political distancing will be the motto of the day for the elections.

Google says it was blind sided by Trumps claim that Google was setting up a National response system for testing. They are working on something that will only be available in the San Francisco Bay area.

Mexico will pay for the wall.
Google has this under control.
The check is in the Mail.
I'll love you in the morning.

Switzerland really hit hard when even the police shuts down(translated)

http://www...eltig-vom-tisch/story/27873684

The Canton of Ticino closes all restaurants, bars and shops from Saturday midnight. Food shops and pharmacies are excluded. This was announced by the Ticino State Council in Bellinzona.
[...]
The Lucerne police will close a number of smaller police stations from Monday to protect their officers from the coronavirus. This is to reduce direct contact with customers and the risk of infection. Lucerne is the first corps in the country to announce such a measure.

A total of 23 posts will be temporarily closed, the Lucerne police announced on Saturday. Affected are, for example, the post at Lucerne railway station as well as several posts in the agglomeration and in the countryside. In contrast, nine other main posts will remain open. The online police stations will be available to the population around the clock for smaller reports.

Norway has reached its testing limits and has started rationing who gets tested.

I strongly suggest everyone do like China. Allow for clinical diagnosis to confirm infection. This clears backlogs.

Then test.

Repeat if necessary.
