Andrew Gillum, who in 2018 came within 34,000 votes of becoming Florida’s governor, was discovered by police at a South Beach hotel early Friday morning in a room with bags of possible methamphetamine and in the company of a man who appeared to have overdosed on drugs, according to a Miami Beach police report.

Police say they were called to the Mondrian South Beach early Friday morning and found paramedics treating Travis Dyson, a 30-year-old Miami man, for an apparent heart attack. They say two other men were in the room: Aldo Mejias and Gillum.

Police say Gillum, who was not arrested, was too intoxicated to answer questions. An offense incident report says that officers found three clear plastic baggies of suspected crystal meth on the bed and floor.

claims he was drunk from a wedding celebration & hasn't used meth... so, if that checks out... much better, but still not a great story to be out there

although capturing the meth vote may be useful in Florida

Mr. Gillum and the other man, Travis Dyson, 30, were found by Aldo Mejias, 56, a friend of Mr. Dyson’s. In a brief phone interview on Friday morning, an emotional Mr. Mejias said he got to the room shortly after 11 p.m. He was supposed to meet Mr. Dyson to go out on South Beach.

But Mr. Dyson and Mr. Gillum, whom Mr. Mejias said he did not know, had arrived much earlier, at around 6 p.m. After Mr. Dyson let Mr. Mejias into the room, Mr. Dyson collapsed onto the bed, according to the police report. Mr. Mejias performed chest compressions on Mr. Dyson.

“I was seeing very shallow breathing,” he said of Mr. Dyson. “The other guy was passed out on the floor, throwing up.”
