I honestly thought they were heading back to America already to be quarantined and hospitalized, but they are appearantly just laying there in Guam and calling for help.

Will Trump help them?

Captain of Aircraft Carrier Pleads for Help as Virus Cases Increase Onboard

WASHINGTON — The captain of an American aircraft carrier deployed to the Pacific Ocean has pleaded with the Pentagon for more help as a coronavirus outbreak aboard his ship continues to spread, officials said Tuesday. Military officials say dozens of sailors have been infected.

In a four-page letter dated Monday, first reported by The San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday, Capt. Brett E. Crozier laid out the dire situation unfolding aboard the warship, the Theodore Roosevelt, which has more than 4,000 crew members. He described what he said were the Navy’s failures to provide him with the proper resources to combat the virus by moving sailors off the vessel.

“We are not at war,” Captain Crozier wrote. “Sailors do not need to die. If we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset — our sailors.”

The carrier is currently docked in Guam.

Thomas B. Modly, the acting Navy secretary, told CNN in an interview that the Navy was working to move sailors off the ship — but that there were not enough beds in Guam to accommodate the entire crew.

“We’re having to talk to the government there to see if we can get some hotel space, create some tent-type facilities there,” Mr. Modly said. “We’re doing it in a very methodical way because it’s not the same as a cruise ship.”

Speaking to reporters Tuesday night, the commander of the Pacific Fleet, Adm. John C. Aquilino, said that “we’re welcoming feedback” regarding the requests outlined by Captain Crozier.

Admiral Aquilino said that crew members would be rotated off the carrier for testing and quarantine before returning aboard. The intent, he said, was to keep the ship ready to carry out its missions. He said that no crew members had been hospitalized thus far, but he declined to specify the number of infections.

In his letter, Captain Crozier had recommended offloading his entire crew, and then quarantining and testing them while the ship was professionally cleaned.

The problem aboard the Roosevelt highlights a central dilemma facing the military: Top officials, who have spent years placing readiness to fight the next war as a top priority, are now finding that maintaining that readiness during a pandemic can endanger the health, and even the lives, of service members. At the same time that Americans are being told to stay at home and practice “social distancing” in public, many service members are instead being told to continue doing their jobs.

The mixed messages have emerged across the armed services. Last week, the Army ordered a halt to most training, exercises and nonessential activities that require troops to be in close contact, but abruptly reversed itself days later, even as the infection rate in the American military rose. Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper has insisted that the armed forces find a way to protect troops from the rampaging virus while performing the military’s essential operations.

The crisis aboard the Roosevelt played out like a slow-moving disaster and highlights the dangers to the Pentagon if the coronavirus manages to infiltrate some of its most important assets, such as bomber fleets, elite Special Operations units and the talisman of American military power, aircraft carriers.

In a statement, a Navy official said that the commanding officer of the Roosevelt “alerted leadership in the Pacific Fleet on Sunday evening of continuing challenges in isolating the virus.”

“The ship’s commanding officer advocated for housing more members of the crew in facilities that allow for better isolation,” the statement said. “Navy leadership is moving quickly to take all necessary measures to ensure the health and safety of the crew of U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, and is pursuing options to address the concerns raised by the commanding officer.”

At its core, the issue on the Roosevelt and other warships stems from the near impossibility of putting adequate social distance among people to stop the spread of the illness. The enormous ship, about 20 stories high, is its own city, but one with an extremely dense population.

Everyone on that ship should be in good health with wartime medical supplies aboard.

Its kindof worth letting it spread unchecked through her ranks as a science experiment. If our previous estimates are correct only a couple deaths would occur and we would gain valuable info on the disease.

"Thomas B. Modly, the acting Navy secretary, told CNN in an interview that the Navy was working to move sailors off the ship — but that there were not enough beds in Guam to accommodate the entire crew"

First off theres definetly enough beds in guam for even a fleet carrier. Half of japan goes there every winter because its a nearby first world tropical resort(all the signage there is in US and Japanese), plus all the hotels for american military contractors and uniteds cargo base.

But why put 5000 possibly infected sailors on a civilian island and further the spread to vulnerable folks. Keep em aboard where the only people they can infect are 23 year olds in good health!

They have known for weeks now and there are no plans in place? Jesus fucking christ, Trump filled the whole administration with dumb fuck evangelicals and loyalists.

Every major base should be prepared for mass quarantine in the event of an outbreak right now.

"But why put 5000 possibly infected sailors on a civilian island and further the spread to vulnerable folks. Keep em aboard where the only people they can infect are 23 year olds in good health!"

Sam prioritizing minority lives over white people? Dafuq?

This virus is several times deadlier than the flu. If the whole ship gets infected, almost certainly a few sailors will die.

If you quarantine them all and social distance them, you can stop the spread and hopefully nobody dies.

Also, it fucks the military preparedness of a fucking carrier to have everybody on it get sick at once especially if you have key personnel get incapacitated.

~80% of covid patients in the general population get mild symptoms, and with the younger and healthier crew a warship will be even less effected.

A warship better be able to function with such light casualties.

"If the whole ship gets infected, almost certainly a few sailors will die."

If all of guam gets it 1000 people will die.

Lol.

But its purely logical. Guam is like a third white a third indigenous and a third japanese. Theres going to be a ton more dead valuable humans amongst the 1000 dead of guam than 2 or so that will die if we let the carrier run to completion.

Although one could make the argument that of 1000 dead from covid, 980 or so were ancient or obese. So in the grand scheme of things it probably doesnt matter if we button up the ship or release it on the island.

Move the current crew to a quarantine on a military base on mainland USA.

Let someone clean the ship. Put the cleaning guy in quarantine afterwards.

Move in a new crew to the ship.

"~80% of covid patients in the general population get mild symptoms, and with the younger and healthier crew a warship will be even less effected."

And the rest require hospitalization and 5% require ICU care.

And you know why the young die less? Hospitals prioritize them during triage so they get ventilators. They let the old people die so the older patients have even more fatalities. That's one reason why the CFR is so much lower in non-overwhelmed places like Korea and Germany.

"Although one could make the argument that of 1000 dead from covid, 980 or so were ancient or obese."

Hate to break it to you Sam but only the enlisted men and marines are in any shape. Many if not most officers are fat fucks. It's lax as fuck once you climb the ranks.

Anyways, Guam has plenty of space. Just put them in open camps with field tents and have them dig latrines and shit. Fucking carriers are disease spreaders. It's like 3 bunks in a stack for the enlisted.

Probably worse than prison for spreading disease.

There is some age discrimination. In Norway, that is business as usual. Old people will not get ventilators if the doctor thinks it merely prolongs the inevitable.

For someone who has been searching for information that this disease doesn't hit 30-year olds, I'm surprised you don't know that Sam.

This disease is deadlier than the flu across all age brackets. Not many in their 30's and 40's die but plenty do need ventilator support. I don't know why you think that being young somehow makes you immune.

That is a broad age range and in no way makes duckhat correct about anything. Especially since the average usn sailor is younger and far less fat than the usa 20-54 general population.

Thus hospitalization is less frequent per case in the younger groups.

This is turning into that China story about the doctor who blew the whistle trying to alert the authorities about the virus.

Now this captain blew the whistle as well, trying to alert the authorities that the virus is on the loose on his ship. So now the USA is punishing him. Maybe they will throw him jail.

He got what he wanted in a timely manner. That is something you want senior officers to achieve.

Ships in general are petri dishes and a US carrier is not exception.

Isolate as sea/berth is fine for as long as there is no infection on board. But, yah, get the crew off once there is.

It also has to do with ship readiness. Let the infection burn itself out by removing future hosts.

The carrier could be out of commission for months if you let the infection slowly rotate amongst the crew.
jergul

Fri Apr 03 07:05:50
Its fine now. The ship has 16 ICU and 48 sickbays or something like that. With a full medical detachment.

It can easily handle 100 or so infections. 1000 or so - not so much.

Hopefully its something stupid like procedural. The Ship wants verification that the patients are not infected with covid-19 in addition to whatever they need the hospital for.

Hopefully they will drop that if it is that. Still not enough testing capacity to do it, patients to not generally have 10 days to wait for test returns before admittance (and in those 10 days they could still get infected, so the test would prove nothing).

It should have been ready to accept patients at sea. I am actually thinking that is true.

Something beauracratic kept patients from boarding, not readiness.

" (CNN)Sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier cheered for Capt. Brett Crozier as he disembarked the ship for the last time, an overwhelming show of support for their leader who was relieved of his command after issuing a stark warning about a coronavirus outbreak onboard.
New video obtained by CNN shows a large crowd gathered to give Crozier a warm and loud send off, clapping and chanting his name as he left the ship. It was a clear expression of appreciation for their former commander who was removed for what the acting Navy Secretary called "poor judgment.""

"Navy hospital ship will no longer require a negative Covid-19 test for patients who board

From CNN's Mark Morales

The USNS Comfort, a hospital ship docked in New York City, will now take patients aboard that are not showing symptoms of Covid-19, according to a Federal Emergency Management Agency fact sheet on the ship.

Previously, patients had to have a negative test from their discharging hospital before being admitted on to the ship.

The change in procedure was done in an effort to bring more patients aboard the USNS Comfort.

Patients who are brought aboard the ship without symptoms of Covid-19 will be isolated and tested upon arrival. Any patient that tests positive for coronavirus will be transferred to a hospital that is treating Covid-19 patients, according to the FEMA fact sheet.

The USNS Comfort will also begin taking patients from the Javits Federal Medical Center so the Javits location can being treating Covid-19 patients."

There we go. Right on as usual.

> patients to not generally have 10 days to wait for test returns before admittance

10 day wait hasn't been the case up here for the already sick. 5-10 days for results is more so folks going to urgent care clinics and drive-through testing than hospitals.

The hospital system I'm familiar with (and I assume the others too) developed the capacity to do in-house (well, in-system) testing when it became clear that the CDC was holding their dick in their hand wrt testing.

When they were just spinning up, they had the capacity to do 90 tests per day in-housr with an eight hour turnaround. Last I heard, they had capacity to process 5,000 tests per day. Not at an individual campus mind, but at a system-wide lab.

Comfort is only taking not sick. I felt it relevant to refer to the baseline wait time. The problem was definitely wanting confirmed negative tests.

Good to hear about inhouse test capacity. Good also that Comfort is not demanding capicity be used to on people without symptoms.
