Georgia prosecutors said Tuesday they plan to present evidence to a grand jury for possible charges against men who chased, and eventually gunned down, an unarmed black man they believed was a burglar — but whose family say was simply jogging.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was shot to death in Brunswick, a coastal city about midway between Savannah and Jacksonville, Florida, on Feb. 23 as he was running through the quiet neighborhood of Satilla Shores.

...

Lee Merritt, a lawyer for the victim's family, posted a brief video clip to Twitter on Tuesday that purportedly shows Arbery tussling with his killer.

The footage, which appears to be taken by a motorist coming up to the scene, could not be immediately verified by NBC News.

"The video clearly shows Mr. Arbery jogging down the road in the middle of the day," Merritt said in a statement. "Mr. Arebery had not committed any crime and there was no reason for these men to believe they had the right to stop him with weapons or to use deadly force in furtherance of their unlawful attempted stop."

The men who chased down Arbery have been identified by police as Brunswick resident Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son Travis McMichael, 34.

The older McMichael, with his .357 Magnum and his son, with a shotgun, told police they believed Arbery might be a burglar and chased him in their truck.

After the men caught up with Arbery, there was a fatal confrontation.

"McMichael stated (that) the unidentified male began to violently attack Travis and the two men then started fighting over the shotgun at which point Travis fired a shot and then a second later there was a second shot,” according to a a Glynn County police report.

from another article

"
McMichael, who worked several years for the Brunswick Police Department before working as an investigator in the Brunswick District Attorney’s Office, told police there were several break-ins in the neighborhood.

McMichael told police he saw Arbery running down Satilla Drive, he then ran inside his home and asked his son Travis McMichael to help him confront Arbery.

McMichael and his son got a shotgun and handgun because they “didn’t know if Arbery was armed or not.”

The police report says the father and son got into their truck and drove down Satilla Drive toward Burford Drive.

Gregory McMichael stated when they arrived at the intersection of Satilla Drive and Holmes Drive, they saw Arbery running down Burford Drive.

In the report, McMichael says they attempted to cut off Arbery, but he turned around and began running back in the other direction.

McMichael and his son continued to follow Arbery, they shouted “stop, stop, we want to talk to you.”

McMichael pulled up next to Arbery. Travis McMichael got out of the truck with the shotgun.

According to statements, that’s when McMichael says Arbery attacked his son and the two men started fighting over the gun at which point Travis McMichael fired a shot. A second later there was a second shot.

Arbery fell down on the pavement.

seems pretty weak cause to suspect him :p same rationale Zimmerman had

i kinda doubt what was said is accurate as well :p... too bad not good enough audio in that video clip

i guess it will come down to whether you can detain people at gunpoint in public spaces with no real cause... i kinda doubt it, but it's Georgia

obviously, Arbery should not have engaged the dude too, even if provoked (which almost certainly happened)

here's the police report (not copy/pastable)

it adds to above articles that the hillbilly claimed to have seen the break-in suspect in surveillance videos & believed the runner/jogger to be that suspect when spotting him from his yard

Seems reasonable, I'm fairly certain blacks are not allowed to jog in public.

In all seriousness this guy(s) seems to be a loose cannon/vigilante wannabe.

Its fucking crazy in the South, when we have major Hurricanes and shit the cops will be on the local news warning people that looters can be shot on sight!!!

I mean just forget a trial while your doing something that is not endangering someones life you can be killed and that's encouraged....

That video I think the two rednecks are fucked. You hear the shotgun go off almost at the same moment the two in front of the truck meet. I would bet the idiot was pointing the shotgun and the other guy grabbed it and got it pointed away from him just before the trigger was pulled. Nothing there looks like the black guy was attacking until after a shot was fired.

Unlike Zimmerman, they were not retreating.

They themselves said they were executing a citizen's arrest - which just means false imprisonment + kidnapping

Should have spent more time lifting and less time running - would have been a better video if we saw him pry away the shotgun and execute them both

the first two prosecutors recused themselves over connections to the hillbillies, but one said this:

[[“It appears Travis McMichael, Greg McMichael and Bryan Williams were following in ‘hot pursuit,’ a burglary suspect, with solid first hand probable cause, in their neighborhood, and asking/telling him to stop. It appears their intent was to stop and hold this criminal suspect until law enforcement arrived. Under Georgia law this is perfectly legal.”]]

even though that klansman ally seems to buy it, seems unlikely to me that there was 'solid first-hand probable cause'... gotta see those surveillance videos... from my experience, they tend to be poor quality & dark-skinned blacks would be the hardest to try to recognize

the 3rd prosecutor (who wants to take it to a grand jury) said: “A private person may arrest an offender if the offense is committed in his presence or within his immediate knowledge.”

which seems a fairly neutral comment to me about the law, & seems unlikely to apply here

Biden of course commented on this case, because white-on-black homicides are apparently major national incidents.

Meanwhile, 150 people have been murdered in Chicago alone this year. But we'll never learn the names of any of those people, since they werent the victims of the "right" type of murder.

I wouldn't want armed hillbillies patrolling the neighborhood and "arresting" joggers due to vague suspicions.

Of course, when looking at the evidence that the media is not widely reporting, it tells a different tale.

First, the same house that was previously burglarized had a visit from Arbery the same day he was shot. Second, a gun had been stolen from a truck in the neighborhood recently, and the hillbillies suspected it was the same person. So they had reason to believe Arbery was armed.

And of course, Arbery was a convicted felon:

"Arbery was arrested in December of 2012 by Glynn County Schools Police for bringing a handgun into the Brunswick High gymnasium during a basketball game. When an officer spotted the .380 caliber handgun in his waistband, the then 19-year-old Arbery attempted to flee.

Arbery was sentenced to five years’ probation as a first offender on charges of carrying a weapon on campus and several counts of obstructing a law enforcement officer."

He was also convicted of violating that probation and for shoplifting.

Anecdotal evidence says Arbery was the one burglarizing the neighborhood. Did the police search his home for the fishing equipment and/or pistol?

pretty much every black youth has a criminal record so that doesn't mean that much

and not sure it matters if he's the burglar, just how solid a reason they had to suspect him... if his clothes match surveillance that's about the only way imo... i can't imagine a face shot so accurate you could match it to someone 'hauling ass' along your street

"pretty much every black youth has a criminal record so that doesn't mean that much "

The authors found that by age 18, 30% of black men, 26% of Hispanic men and 22% of white men have been arrested. By 23, those numbers climb to 49% for black men, 44% for Hispanic men and 38% for white men.

He wasn't just arrested. He was convicted 3 times.

"and not sure it matters if he's the burglar, just how solid a reason they had to suspect him... if his clothes match surveillance that's about the only way imo... i can't imagine a face shot so accurate you could match it to someone 'hauling ass' along your street "

His aunt verified he was the one seen in the video the day of. The video from the actual burglary was inconclusive.

Honestly, Regardless of his guilt I think it would have been better if they were armed with cameras I stead of guns.

As for the convictions these days convictions dont mean much. Look at the conviction rate for say Montgomery County PA ( where Cosby got charged) its like 94%, are that many people guilty? I doubt it, its often the tactics used.

Imo , self defense is one thing. If its a non violent offense the gun shouldn't have been out ready to rock, that was the problem.

Even if he was guilty , death is not the sentence for stealing stuff, if someone breaks into your house while your there, thats more understandable.

Remember when LeBron had his goons forcible steal a cell phone and delete unflattering footage of himself getting dunked on by a high school kid?

Remember when LeBron continually suggested that money was more important than standing up for the rights of Chinese citizens?

Yeah, LeBron definitely should STFU.

Nope. Two go fine hand in hand. LeBron can do both, he is very successful in making money, hopefully he is eqally successful in his fight against "injustice and societal ills", as you put it.

hillbillies arrested

"
Two white men have been arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault in the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man, in southern Georgia.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son, Travis McMichael, 34, into custody Thursday evening, according to a statement from the statewide law enforcement agency. The arrests came after a video showing the two men’s Feb. 23 encounter with Mr. Arbery circulated on social media and sparked a national outcry.

there's talk of Arbery walking around a home under construction lot:

"

so trespassing i guess

Nimatzo, That's what I've been saying. Guilt in this case doesn't matter, idk if he was or nor.

1. Citizens should not be chasing down ppl suspected of crimes, especially while armed.

2. Even getting shot for stealing and living is absurd, you don't get shot for theft, thats like getting beat with a bat for jaywalking.

Trayvon was killed for bashing Z's head into the pavement because he was offended. Z had retreated to his car on the advice of the dispatcher and was almost there, with a holstered and concealed weapon.

Arbery was chased, cut off, and had weapons drawn on him.

"Z had retreated to his car on the advice of the dispatcher and was almost there, with a holstered and concealed weapon"

if you believe everything he said (& even then it's being generous)

Z walked across the path Trayvon went down to allegedly get an address for cops on the next street over (which he never called in)... and the incident occurred at a T intersection of the path, which coincidentally is the exact spot you might go to to look for Trayvon

so i don't doubt Trayvon went up to him at some point, but i do doubt Z was merely on his way back to his vehicle, i bet he was standing there the whole time scouting

these hillbillies could get same verdict... you can provoke a fight, start to lose then shoot your opponent (Z didn't get acquitted for supposedly retreating)

i'm a self-declared expert on that case :p... please cite what i said was wrong

there definitely is no evidence of retreat, and he definitely was found not guilty based on 'fearing for his life' as claiming Trayvon was going for the gun (plus had the head injuries)... and he definitely provoked Trayvon by following him thru the neighborhood in his vehicle, and noted on 911 call that Trayvon noticed him doing it & ran from him and then Zim got out and followed (& there's no way of knowing exactly what happened, but i did say i believed Trayvon then came up to Zim on that path... at the intersection / best scouting location)
