Prosecutors say man used eBay to become a ‘millionaire shoplifter’
Tribune Media Wire

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. — Court documents explain how police say an Indianapolis man ran a million dollar shoplifting scam.

Hamilton County prosecutors say the crimes spanned several counties and had been going on for years.

Police believe the suspect, Ryan Walker, would swap UPC bar codes on high dollar items at stores like Target and Walmart.

After paying pennies on the dollar, Walker would allegedly turn around and sell those same items on eBay for significantly more than he paid.

In one example, the accused thief walked to the toy aisle at the Target on Michigan road in Carmel and picked up a Lego Star Wars set worth $169. Police say Walker slapped a fake bar code on the box and checked out for just over $20.

Police claim that crime was duplicated countless times spanning nearly a decade at Target and Walmart stores in Carmel, Fishers, Avon and Plainfield, allowing Walker to pocket over $1 million.

In another example of how the scam worked, prosecutors claim Walker bought a $200 electric toothbrush at Walmart, but used a fake UPC code to pay just $24.97.

Police say Walker sold the model on eBay for $122.50, profiting $97.53 from just that one sale.

The affidavit shows Walker’s eBay account received in excess of $1.1 million since it was created in 2010.

From March 2018 to March of this year prosecutors believe Walker sold 302 sewing/cutting machines, 285 electric toothbrushes, 233 Lego sets and much more.

After several months of investigating, police searched a storage unit they claim Walker rented as well as his home. Court documents say officers found dozens of stolen items with fraudulent UPC codes taped to the boxes.

Walker remains behind bars in the Hamilton County jail, facing a variety of criminal charges.

Before his arrest, prosecutors say Walker had seven active warrants from four different counties for similar crimes.

Paramount, Jewish is not a race. Maybe you need a thread for Guess the religion.

PAtom, Yeah, I was reading through a bunch of criminal stories and I guess I mixed it up.

There was an Ohio woman who got caught stealing at Wal-Mart. Lifted her dress and shit diarrhea at an LP officer just back in April.

Still behind bars. A white guy would be out. Seven active warrants. Means he was caught seven times. Not that smart.
Shit like this is why we need real live cashiers and not those damn automated ones. An actual cashier should have caught that big a price difference and if they didn't that just shows they don't need to raise the minimum wage.

KILL YOURSELF IMMEDIATELY.

I am not standing in line while some semi-intelligent 60 year old high school dropout coughs all over my groceries because you mistakenly believe that fucktard would A) be observant enough to catch this scam and B) would give a shit enough to stop it and C) would be strong, nimble, and committed enough to catch the thief before he left the store.

And of course, shoplifting $100 worth of legos is going to get a slap on the wrist and then back to shoplifting.

Anyway, either white or black, and since it is Indiana, I'm guessing black.

Automated checkouts are a bane upon the land.

Dakyron - cashiers don't chase anybody.

And this sort of thing is common but typically done by employees or with their friends as accomplices.

This is like pretty decent in scale but obviously he's retarded.

I didn't realize kargen was a retired 70 year old man who breathes with his mouth open while fumbling in his wallet for cash.

The only thing wrong with self-checkout is when they institute all the crazy rules some fuck came up with during development. Like you have to put each thing in the bagging area after scanning, and it doesn't matter if it is a 40lb bag of dog food/mulch/whatever.

Other than that, it is so much more convenient, and right now safe, than going through the regular checkout line.

I get it if you have a cart full of groceries, but when you have 5 items, it is much faster and more convenient.

If I make the effort to go to a retailer and make a purchase. That retailer had best have a live human being to take my money.

If a store like Walmart ever eliminates live cashiers, I'll make it a habit to go there and wander aimlessly down each aisle. Putting many different things in my shopping cart. I'll then go to where the checkouts used to be and abandon the cart there.
Let's see them find a robot to return all them items to the shelves.

Dakyron, I hope you end up working as a cashier. I'm sure the ones you encounter find you a real peach to deal with.

You must look like a real clown screaming at the robots in self check out.

Automated check outs are great. The whole point of automation is to free up human time for more worthy persuits.

Nothing inherently wrong with check out services. People doing that provide vital services as covid-19 has established once and for all.

Most places have both, which is ideal. A few lines to deal with old farts and self-checkout for people running in and out with a few things.

This way I don't have to wait for the senile person in front of me staring at the self-checkout machine as if it was the quadratic equation.

I'll be 72 in August and I prefer self-checkout when possible for many reasons. It is a time saver and I've got better things to do. Seems people in my area avoid them like the plague. Another plus for me and I'm out the door smiling.

While I value the efficiency of self check out - they're super space and man-hours efficient - they encourage theft a lot.

And older clerks catch like more people stealing at self checkout, to the tune of like 20x more cash value in my experience.

So only ring up TVs as bananas with blue-haired 20 year olds?

No, probably won't help you any.

It's bill totals. Older clerks have families and they do groceries. They know how much they cost. Your average 19yo has no idea. So if a shopping cart full of shit ends up totalling 70$ they don't double check that. An old lady is going to.

They're also bored at work and looking for ways to keep things exciting so they are more vigilant. Younger ones space out while bored and stop paying any attention.

(they should all have training to double check big bill items like appliances or consoles or tv's)

I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't some cashiers that were in on the scam. These big store don't pay them worth a damn. No benefits and keep their hours below 30 so they don't have to.

The ability to stop theft is not that far into our future. You'll be able to walk into a store get what you need and walk out without having to deal with checkouts.

The ordinary thief will become obsolete. Welcome to the all seeing eye of life.
