The President Trump:

Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen.

Maybe he call Bill Gates and have him close down the internet?

I will personally write to Trump to let this site stay open. Maybe we could even lure him to us from Twitter?

Yeah this could be a massive opportunity for us (assuming TC has reenabled new registration that is).

@realDonaldTrump
Twitter has now shown that everything we have been saying about them (and their other compatriots) is correct. Big action to follow!

But if China would close down the internet then Rugian would be complaining about human rights violations.

Trump tampers with election and Twitter points out his lies. Then he throws a tantrum. Rugian applauds the attempted subversion of democracy and the clearly blatant, illegal retaliation Trump is planning.

When did rugian become such a tyrant? Rugian = China. Sad.

The bias, lack of integrity, and lack of intelligence amongst modern media is concerning.

The retarded lies of trump are also concerning.

Paramount, First off, China has closed down the internet. Google Xi jin pooh or tianamen square or even Southpark/winnie the pooh.

And, as of now what steps have been taken in the US?

The day Trump actually shuts down social media is the day I believe hes going to.

Hyperbole aside though, hes correct in that major reforms are needed. The major cornerstones of the internet need to be regulated as common carriers and strong 1st Amendment protections should be applied. Otherwise the open internet that has existed for the last twenty years will be turned into TV 2.0, with a handful of executives deciding what the public gets to see.

Silicon Valley has way too much of a political bias and they've shown a vulnerability to pressure campaigns by the media, which is primarily staffed with leftwing activists at this point. Something needs to be done.

"they've shown a vulnerability to pressure campaigns"

Like to China. The southpark episode that got any mention of them banned in China was about how companies censor themselves for China. Also they had Xi as winnie the pooh.

The SP apology to China was the best, truly Trump quality.

Won't do any good to talk to Bill. Al Gore has the switch to the internet. He shut it down for a while Saturday night to keep me from getting credit for the final boss in an Elder Scrolls Online trial. Not sure why Al likes to fuck with me like that.

Maybe Trump asked the Russian to hack and shut down all of your internets. That may be why you are seeing disturbances.

No. Trump hacked the weather to give us tropical storm Berths.

I literally have turtles swimming in my yard, my nieces swing set is just above ankle deep under water.

White House says Trump will sign an executive order "pertaining to social media" tomorrow, but provides no details on what it might say or do.

I hope Trump confiscates Twitter. They have too much freedoom. It is not good for America that private and independent companies or citizens can question what the president is saying.

Paramount, The thing is you mock Trump for that with am exaggeration. But Xi on the other hand literally does that. He banmed any mention of winnie the pooh and Southpark to the point of deleting people's comments posted online that would even mention anything to do with winnie the pooh or SP regardless of whether or not those comments were.mocking him since some had.

Like that is beyond nanny state 1984.

Well, that is kinda expected of a One-party state. But not in a democracy like the US.

That the president says that his freedom of speech is being muzzled just because someone questions or refute his tweets is ridiculous. He can still tweet out anything he likes, so how is his free speech being muzzled?

Besides, no private company has an obligation to provide you with a platform where you can write and say anything you want. Even if Twitter banned Trump forever today or if he would stop using Twitter by his own free will, he would still have his free speech. He can hold press briefings, he can write to newspapers and ask if they want to publish him, he can blog, he can vlog, he can stand on a street corner and speak. Etc and so on.

While I entirely agree that Trump should tread carefully here.

My point is that the same people who attack Trump for in this case having a hissy fit seem totally ok amd supportive.of.the Chinese approach and will act as if the Chinese appoach is.no less free because of something like this. They are not the same.

"Besides, no private company has an obligation to provide you with a platform where you can write and say anything you want"

Sort of iffy. I know it sounds odd, but for example newspapers in the US are semi regulated to give fair and accurate reporting.

Which may in fact lead to more fact checking ironically.

Tbh, I'm not sure on the details of how they are regulated. That may be considered a tabloid, I'm not really sure.

"The major cornerstones of the internet need to be regulated as common carriers and strong 1st Amendment protections should be applied."

You mean like the 1st amendment protections that private corporations have against the government trying to limit their free speech?

"The day Trump actually shuts down social media is the day I believe hes going to."

He's already violated the 1st in relation to social media. This EO will further violate the 1st. The only people in need of protection here are the private corporations having their free speech being assaulted by a tyrant in office. Further, this asinine comment is a massive straw man. The issue isn't shutting down social media, it's blatant attempts to intimidate them by the government. You are siding with China here. Trump is China.

New Fairness Doctrine, government restricting speech with new regulations, done by presidential executive order. Guess the party

I dont know the specifics yet, but Trump seems.to be spiraling out of control a bit lately....

I do find it funny that liberals are now on the side of

" we must protect huge corporarations from.the government"

That's new.

Liberals have always been on the side of "we must protect huge corporations of the vindictive pettiness of tyrants." That's why we often rebuke EU court actions that seem to only serve to punish US tech companies for not being of European origin.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for someone to cut the legs out from under Google, Facebook, etc. But not by some ridiculous notion that free speech isn't being upheld. Want to cut Google's power? Make reasonable, strong laws to protect privacy and curtail data collection. If necessary, break out the ad agency from the rest of the conglomerate. Essentially, be fucking reasonable. Don't make up a persecution complex in an attempt to trample over the 1st amendment.

Hood as usual pulling shit straight out of his ass and getting the First Amendment issue completely backwards.

Social media companies are the public forums of the 21st century and need to act as such. The widespread censorship of conservative voices, now extending to the President of the United States itself, is an intolerable situation and needs to be rectified.

As long as Twitter, Facebook, and Google insist on acting as proxies of the Democratic Party, their legal immunities should be stripped away and they should be treated like any other publisher of content. You can be a forum of speech or a presenter of speech, not both.

Rugian:

They aren't though. Public forums were inanimate objects.

Platforms are owned and governed by people actively shaping what happens on then, incentivising people's behaviour on them.

Imagine if the Roman forum had been owned by an individual, who controlled access to it, and spiked drinks and food with addictive drugs that provoked anger to ensure a suitable level of engagement.

The social network platforms are far more like the circuses than the forum. And those were not known as the centre of the Republic but more as a tool for despots manage and undermine it.

Privately owned platforms cannot be the public forum unless they are regulated and controlled in much the same way financial markets are to avoid conflicts of interest.

But then there is no way to monetise them.

The fuckwit calling for government censorship saying someone else has the 1st amendment backwards. Laughable. Is that orange cum dribbling down your chin?

"As long as Twitter, Facebook, and Google insist on acting as proxies of the Democratic Party"

Pretty funny, considering Facebook was a major reason Trump won the previous election and Fuckerberg has been doing everything he can to get Trump to use Facebook over Twitter. Yeah, so supportive of the Democratic party there, that facebook.

Beyond that, perhaps you should consider why "conservative voices" seem to be synonymous with the violence and offensive behavior that is what is actually getting moderated. Nobody has taken down a post or tweet that sticks to actual rightwing politics.
