What is this? Are people not allowed to demonstrate and protest anymore? This is a violation of human rights.

At Least 70 Arrested at NYC Protest for George Floyd as Nationwide Unrest Continues

At least 70 people were arrested as throngs of protesters in New York City joined demonstrators across the country Thursday in speaking out against police brutality in the wake of a black man's death in Minneapolis.

One of the protesters arrested during the hours-long Justice for George Floyd demonstration in Manhattan punched an officer in the face, while another was carrying a knife, officials said. A third person threw a garbage can at an officer, striking him in the head, police said.

Two officers were injured during the demonstrations, police said. It wasn't clear if any of the demonstrators were hurt.

The protests began Thursday afternoon, with crowds of people gathering in Union Square chanting different refrains against police violence, including "I can't breathe" — the words Floyd said while he was handcuffed and pinned to the ground for almost 10 minutes, the officer's knee on the back of his neck.

"I can't breathe" was also uttered by Eric Garner while he was being taken down in a chokehold by NYPD officers on Staten Island in 2014. The phrase became a rallying cry after Garner's death. Garner's family is expected to attend a follow-up demonstration Friday. The group is expected to meet in Foley Square mid-afternoon and march to the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance.

Protesters say Floyd's killing is reminiscent of Garner and Rodney King, the black man who was violently beaten by Los Angeles police officers. When the cops were acquitted, it sparked riots.

The officers involved in Floyd's killing have been fired but protesters are demanding murder charges.

"We've had enough. It's time for change," one of the protesters tell NBC New York.

Some protesters appeared to have masks on while others did not, but the tight grouping at the park did not allow for any sort of social distancing at a time when the city's COVID-19 case count continues to rise. The state’s emergency coronavirus regulations prohibit the assembly of more than 10 people and require people to wear masks and stay at least six feet apart, but outrage over police killing of another black person trumped social distancing.

Scuffles involving some pushing and shoving between demonstrators and police broke out periodically during Thursday's demonstration and tensions continued to rise.

Video showed at least one demonstrator being clubbed and others being wrestled to the ground as some protesters shoved officers and screamed insults.

Family of Eric Garner Reaches Out to Loved Ones of George Floyd

Some demonstrations at Union Square ended around 5:30 p.m., with police giving chase to some members of the crowd while attempting to keep Broadway clear. However, there were still some protests continuing throughout the streets of Lower Manhattan as the night wore on, with protesters throwing objects. All were said to be under control, according to police.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has been adamant about following social distancing rules, has not commented on the protests but he tweeted Thursday that he is "horrified" by the video captured the moments leading up to Floyd's death.

"George Floyd was murdered in broad daylight and the man who killed him was a police officer — and that officer didn't seem to care at all that he was taking a man's life," the mayor wrote. "If George was white, he would be alive right now."

De Blasio was immediately criticized over his tweets due to the similar nature of Floyd and Garner's killings and the differences in his response to their deaths.

The protests in Minneapolis, meanwhile, have intensified. Police were forced to abandon a local precinct, which was set on fire late Thursday. It was the third night of at-times violent protests in the Twin Cities.

You know what's funny. With all.this going on in the US, honkongers are still pleading for help from Trump and waving US flags....

You don't hear anyone in the US wanting help from China or waving commie flags.

Maybe because the people’s voices are not being heard. I’m sure there are many people in Minnesota who would like to get some kind of help from China.

Also to properly compare US riots to HK, was if the US government was promoting the murder of Floyd as a good act and standard practice.

That is not the case.

Where is the mayor and police chief claiming that protesting is not allowed this time? Didn't they say everyone would be arrested?

WTF does he get to pick and choose which protests are allowed?
