Look at a map and it’s hard to think otherwise. And Beijing would agree. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has said it will take Taiwan ― by force, if necessary. Take Beijing at its word. But that doesn’t mean it will succeed. Not if the price is too high — and the certainty of American and Japanese military involvement on Taiwan’s behalf puts things into the “too expensive” category.

An amphibious assault would result in massive losses for the PRC even without aid from the U.S. It's a logistic nightmare. China isnt invading Taiwan anytime soon, not outside a WWIII scenario. They cant even handle Hong Kong.

This is only if China decides the US/Japan don't offer anything other than "strong condemnation" and such nonsense. Obviously, if the US joins the fight, then things change dramatically. Considering Russia annexed Crimea with barely a wimper, China could realistically think that it could invade Taiwan now, with the US fighting COVID. Of course, that would virtually guarantee a Trump 2nd term, so there is that.
