Any bets that Trump and McConnell won't insist on appointing a new justice before the election?

When Obama was president a SC judge died 9 months before the election. The Republicans demanded to wait to appoint a new judge until after the election. The Democrats agreed to the demands. Then Trump was elected and was allowed to nominate a judge.

So now a judge died when Trump is president and there is only like 6-7 weeks(?) to the election, and the Republicans are demanding that a new judge is appointed BEFORE the election.

Paramount, The Democrats did not agree to that. They didnt have a majoriry in the Senate. One perk of having a majority in the Senate is that the Majority leader ( Mitch McConnell) has tge authority to bring appointments to the floor to vote or in that case refuse to bring the appointment to the floor.

The Senate was the key.

As you can see it was thw democrats in 2013 who abolished the 60 vote rule for judges and federal appointees, which is why Trump has had it easy passing such people through. He has a majority in the Senate and doesnt need the 60 supermajority.

I should point out that in 2017 the Republicans added SC judges to the Obama rule.

Trumps response was decent. It actually comes off as more sincere since he had some music in the background from the campaign event.

I'm betting that Trump was informed well ahead of RBG's death, that it was coming very soon. Probably a rehearsed response.

Biden says he would only select a black women potus.

So we can see already what his cabinet will be , identity politics over merit.

I trust in Trump to push this through asap.

Reid was the Judas of our Constitutional process that was originally designed for necessary bipartisanship government approval. Gridlock was the prevention of advantage by either political party.

This is a good place to copy/paste with a statement I agree by Seb.

True conservatives understand the importance of institutions and the need for restraint in power.

TJ, you're right that Reid fucked the pooch on that one. His choice was to let many federal judge seats sit vacant or do what he did. McConnell had put up a Filibuster road block that wasn't coming down as long as Obama was in office.
I guess that's ok as long as you don't mind a back log in cases.
McConnell has effectively taken over the Court system of this country. Hope we can afford to pay the price.

The above quote is not true. McConnell is in no way shape or form demonstrating any restraint in wielding his power.

Tom:

It is true. I didn't suggest in anyway that McConnell was showing restraint so you haven't a defense against the principle Seb stated.

Clearly, there aren't many true conservatives that remain in Government. Play with the bull and you get stuck by the horns.

RIP

The game of thrones spawned by this, on top of the election involving man child with no regard to the nation beyond his own sphere of existence, on top of the worst pandemic in 100 years... you can't make this stuff up.

I'm loving watching the Republicans waffle so fuk'n hard on "no nomination in election year" rhetoric that they hammered Obama with.

When did being conservative become synonymous with unapologetic hypocrisy? It's a shame the party is full of such selfish people now days.

Lol, so democrats can break precedent but republicans have to stick to a broken precedent? Sorry, they broke it, they bought it, enjoy having a 6-3 court fornthe next 20 years.

Remember, if you will, the sheer glee of the left when Scalia was found dead with a pillow over his face, and they thought they would get to shift the court with a move from the most conservative justice to a "moderate" one (who would immediately veer left on the bench).
