Utopia Talk / Politics / Fantasy/Sci-fi series

Weve had enough t.v./movie threads to know I like a good high fantasy/Sci do series so I figured I'd list some favorites, in no particular order.

1. Game of Thrones- Kind of a no brainer, learned about the series on the general forum about 6 months before it started and watched it from the start. Perfect series till the last season which....well the daves fucked it up.

2. Middle earth, encompassing LOTR/The hobbit. Pre GoT's this was how to do fantasy right. Classic series, but seems a little to PG and simplified since GoT's came out.

3. The expanse-I seen the first season, it was ok, didnt grab me, but I know its popular on these boards.

4.Lost-Havnt seen it in years, but very engrossing, the season with time travel got too weird and the ending wqs corny but all around, a fantastic story.

5. Once upon a time- As far as making fairy tales into a live action series, this is the best execution of that premise. Good actors, amazing setting/wardrobe and fairly well written. I mean its gonna be a little cornbally, but it comes with the territory. All around as good as it could be unless it was on HBO, in which case we would see the whole Queen getting railed, plenty of cleavage though.

6. Twilight zone- Need I say more? Jordan peele hosts the new version in its 2nd season. I have a fondness for the style of new stories each episode, tales from the crypt, masters of horror, Of course the several versions of The outer Limits which is a darker clone of the Twilight zone. The new version is great.

7. Black Mirror-Deserves its own mention. Another knock off of the Twilight Zone but modernized and British, definitley has its own flavor...well worth a look if your into Outer limits/Twilight zone.

8. The X-files- 10/10, possibly my favorite series of all time. I preferred the monster of the week episodes to the alien stuff, but I'm not even Sure of other shows like this, please point me in the direction if you do.

9.Stargate Atlantis- I never liked the priginal stargate sg1 show. Atlantis was pretty cool though, exploring worlds, a little star trekky.

10. Starwars- We talk plenty of SW on these boards.

11.Tales from the loop- So basically its about a town with a "loop" ( think hadron collider) narrated and partially starred from GoT's " Sparrow". Bunch little oddball sortmof twilight zone stories except they all take place within the town and they lightly intersect. I. Think its an amazon original.

12. The booth at the end- Excellent demonstration in writing/acting over budget. The entire 2 seasons take place in 2 diner booths.A guy who plays as an intermediary for something ( devil?) Has people come to him and ask for something, he doesnt grant them the wish but what he does is tell them what to do in order tomget that, like a girl wanted to be prettier, so she has to rob a bank and tell him all the details.A true hidden gem.

Babylon5 is good, if dated. Exactly the age so that actors are falling like flies.

B5 is a slow burn - the show writer was a pioneer of series long arcs and deep themes and long term character arcs - the first season is pretty hard going: the acting can be patchy etc.

A lot of what made it excellent is now mainstream expectation for drama series. But even so there are some truly outstanding performances and characters - two characters that go from comic relief to some of the most beautifully written tragic figures through entirely natural character arc.

You have to stick with it through to the second season before it picks up.

You should watch the BSG remake - it was stunning.

The arc is spectacular. The series followed a preset plot development over 5 seasons.

Yah, we are doing a b5 wake this saturday. Lots of booze involved but of course.

B5 seemed ok. I mean Ive seen like 3 episodes. One was abput the security guy building a motorcycle , me was about some crime boss guy using a brain sucking monster that freaked out the Napolean looking guy and another one was about some great dead general they thought some other race of peiple ate but it was a setup to try and start a war.

Oh and another about a little girl telepathic deciding who she wanted to go with, I think she was Asian.

I also totally forgot Stranger things. Great "fresh nostalgia" but season three was spotty, it had its moments.

I have memory of reading somewhere that JMS had the foundation of the story arc ready for an additional 1000 year in the future and millions (?) of years before the events of the 5 seasons. Some of which is in the series. He knew what he was doing, he knew where he was going. Did the people who create Lost know where they were going? It's in the fucking name of the show! How could we have been so foolish?

Wow, no mention of Firefly yet? Retards.

I would also recommend The Lost Room, if you can find it. Sadly, it only got one mini-season. But I remember it being excellent (admittedly this was a number of years ago and I haven't had a chance to revisit it yet).

Hmm, yes, but not really sure any other way would have worked much better.

The show was always about the cycle of violence, faith etc. so it's quite hard to end.

It's not the worst ending of a series out there.

Another good one (with a good ending):

Life on Mars and the sequel Ashes to Ashes - those were awesome - however - beware, there is an American "remake" of Life on Mars which is utterly dire and should be avoided at all costs.

A new one

Raised by wolves- A war between religious people and non religious leave earth pretty much destroyed. Handfuls of survivors flee to other planets. This is the story of a boy raised by a reprogrammed Android soldier called " mother" and a normal.android called "father"....there is a lot more to it, but no spoilers, it starts kind Onslow but gets better.

His dark Materials-I want to really like this show, and its ok, not sure though why it just seems like somethings missing, but its ok.

Cancelling Firefly. The real reason we hate Fox.
Raised by wolves was fine before it found religion.

B5 just got a remastered re release on Amazon. Still 4:3 as the special effects were rendered on 4:3 only through.

Digitally remastered. The master tapes were tossed out long ago. Hence the same format.

JMS gets asked this a lot on twitter and often replies.

IIRC, WB had 35mm film remastered at the end of each episode with film and CGI integrated for archival and it is still there - but is all in 4:3. I'm guessing this is what they used. WB internal politics and a vendetta against B5 (it was produced by a division that wasn't supposed to make dramas or something, and then the rights also got super complicated).

I think I read they have the original stock 35mm film too and available, but the issue is that the CGI is only rendered in 4:3, and they (may?) have lost the source files for that part so re-rendering them is either very costly or not possible.

WB hates B5 for complicated internal political reasons, and has generally been obstructive to date.
