Biden to end support for Saudi-led offensive operations in Yemen
Biden will speak at the State Department later Thursday

President Biden will end U.S. support for Saudi-led offensive operations in Yemen, his national security adviser announced Thursday -- marking a withdrawal from support for a Saudi-led coalition fighting Houthi rebels in the war-torn country.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters that Biden will "announce an end to American support for offensive operations in Yemen."

Biden will make the announcement as part of a wide-ranging speech at the State Department on Thursday afternoon.

"That is a promise he made in the campaign that he will be following through on," Sullivan said during a White House press briefing.

As an example, he pointed to the stopping of two arms sales of precision-guided munitions that were moving forward under the last administration.

The civil war, which has been ongoing since 2015, has led to the deaths of 112,000 people and has obliterated the country’s infrastructure. U.N. estimates say 13.5 million Yemenis face food insecurity.

Sullivan also said that Biden will announce the naming of a special envoy. The Associated Press reported that Biden will appoint Timothy Lenderking, a career foreign service member who has served in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

"[Biden] will talk about the United States playing a more active and engaged role in diplomacy to bring an end to the conflict in Yemen and that will include the naming of a special envoy which will happen today," Sullivan said.

The civil war began in 2015 when Saudi began the offensive against the Houthis, who had seized territory and launched missiles across the border into Saudi Arabia.

The U.S. has, until recently, backed the Saudis in the conflict and Trump-era Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had imposed sanctions on the Houthis in the final days of the administration, designating them a "foreign terrorist organization" (FTO). That move was part of the administration’s efforts to isolate Iran and also support the Saudis in the region.

However, since taking office, the Biden administration has suspended some of the sanctions attached to that designation until Feb. 26 -- although it hasn’t yet reversed the designation. A U.N. report warned that the designation of the Houthis as an FTO could harm aid and food deliveries into the country, hurting the peace process and exacerbating malnutrition.

That report by a panel of experts painted a grim situation of the crisis.

"The situation in Yemen has continued to deteriorate, with devastating consequences for the civilian population," it said.

It accuses all parties involved of "continuous and widespread human rights and international law violations with impunity; and escalations in fighting and its impact on civilians, including displacements."

"All parties continue to commit egregious violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, including indiscriminate attacks against civilians, enforced disappearances and torture," the report says.

The report also said "there is a growing body of evidence that shows that individuals or entities within the Islamic Republic of Iran are engaged in sending weapons and weapons components to the Houthis" in violation of U.N. resolutions.

This is indeed a good move, but I have to question the wisdom of alienating the Saudis while simultaneously declaring war on domestic fossil fuels and axing the Keystone pipeline.

Even so, this is the right move to make.

US should send Pompedo as a ”special” envoy to Saudi Arabia and then when he meets with Mohammed – drop some missilles on all of them and then take their oil fields.

At the very least SA is the lesser of two evils. The other being Iran who's state motto is Death to America/the West and the Saudis.

On side note, Europe convicted an Iranian Terrorist/diplomat today for an attempted bomb attack.

"At the very least SA is the lesser of two evils."

Incorrect. Iran is the greater evil to the US govt. Saudi Barbaria is the greater evil to the American people. Al Qaeda and ISIS are not Shiite groups.

And the house of Saud has helped fight those groups.

Meanwhile Hezzbollah is fully supported by the government. The same government who literally attacked a US military base aroind a year ago.Soldiers are still US people.

SA is also the largest purchaser of US military equipment.

Also from purely anecdotal evidence, I only have one family from Iran Im friends with, I have a lot of Saudis O grew up with ( good people)

The Iranians dislike the Ayatollah more than I do...especially the father, he fled the revolution for Doylestown PA and runs a successful nursery and landscaping company.

All the Saudis worked for Aramco.

Apparently Biden is changing the marketing but not the policy. Just saying our support is only "defensive" now. Lulz.

Yea, the problem isn't even the Saudis, the problem is the sunni Wahabi sect, which the Saudis are married to. It is objectively worse than twelver shia and other sunni sect, even in the crazy things they proscribe. It isn't even Close, socially and culturally Iran is far ahead of Saudi Arabia, you can just take the position of women, it is bad in Iran, it is worse in Saudi Arabia. They hang people in Iran, the behead people in Saudi Arabia. There is a vibrant (but surpressed) intellectual community in Iran, nobody has ever heard of Saudi intellectual community. All these things makes Iran a far bigger threat to Israel or anyone else in the region, than Saudi Arabia. Which is the real reason, Iran is sufficiently authoritarian and aggressive to make people worried, but unlike the Arab states, not backwards enough to be dismissed out of hand. The Israelis understand this perfectly. I have heard several Israeli military people and analysts, almost admire Iran and point the similarities with their own culture and people and how they themselves would go about a conflict, when describing their threat from this enemy. It is really an "accident" of history they Iran and Israel are now at odds with each other.

One of the biggest strategic (from the outside) differences between dealing with Shia and Sunni, is that Sunnis are decentralized, there is no singular Sunni leader to make a deal with. The centralized structure of Shia Islam is of Persian origin, most recently the Islamic revolution. This goes way back to the early days of Islam though, the entire structuring of Islam and the Arabic language was mostly done by persians. I think all the hadiths (sunni and shia), certainly all the prominent hadiths, are written by Persians.

There are some obvious pros and cons to either system. You can easily make a lasting peace with Shias in a way you can't with sunnis. On the other hand the decentralized structure of sunni Islam opens up avenues for reform that are the prerogative of a single shia leader.

Nimi raises an important point that helps explain why Iran has not been destroyed no matter the cost.

Israel ultimately understands that Iran is doing what Israel wuold do in its stead.

The waah, waahs on both sides is just hyperbole.

I can't remember who it was, but he was ex Israeli intelligence, explaining, that Iranians first send Money and equipment, if that doesn't work, they send their advisors to train locally and then if that doesn't work, they send their allied militia groups, they do not send their own soldiers if they don't have to. And you know, that is exactly how we would do it.
