Off and on Ive probably lived almost 4 years in SC.And locally for whatever reason drunk cops on The news either crashing their car or found on the side of the road passed out is like a bimonthly occurrence.

I lived most of my life near Philly and this almost never happened.

another thing that happens in the south

"DALLAS (AP) - A massive crash involving more than 130 vehicles on an icy Texas interstate left six people dead and dozens injured Thursday amid a winter storm that dropped freezing rain, sleet and snow on parts of the U.S... At least 65 people were treated at hospitals, with 36 of them taken by ambulance from the crash site, including three with critical injuries, said Matt Zavadsky, spokesman for MedStar, which provides the ambulance service for the area. Numerous others were treated at the scene and released, he said."

i realize southerners aren't used to driving on ice.. but you'd still think they would have heard rumors that you should not drive full speed on it

wwd, Its crazy, Ive seen dustings of snow down here and everything shuts down, they panic and drive like nuts.

Meanwhile in PA I remember driving in snow tunnels....

That doesnt just happen in the south unfortunately. Any time an interstate rapidly changes conditions... either surface friction or visibility... from good to very bad very rapidly... real bad things can happen

I watched a bit of the video of the pile-up in Texas. Quit watching when it started getting really bad.
When I lived in Dallas I kept my ass home if it snowed or we had ice. They really have no clue how to drive in that stuff.

Monument Hill on I-25 in Colorado has had some really bad multi vehicle accidents in the past because of ice and blowing snow.

Well, what kind of winter tires are people using?

Hint: That answer the question you were wondering about.

I am very good at winter driving. The first step is making sure the car is equipped properely.

But what does that have to do drunk cops crashing cars...

Ah yes Sir Gustaf af Penguine. It is a French name and means "From Penguine". A small fiefdom in the south of France. Sir Gustaf was the feudal lord of Penguine and was elected as Prince of the Norwegian Kingdom when King Olaf XXI died in a whale hunting accident. He didn't have any heirs.

I tell all the kids starting to drive in winter conditions to pretend (boys) balls are mounted on the soles of their feet, (girls) that they are giving themselves a mamogram with their feet.

You try like hell to give yourself as much room as possible between you and other vehicles.

I haven't bought snow tires in 30 years. But for the last 12 years I have had all wheel drive. We just traded our Subaru Legacy after 11 years on a Hyundai Kona. Both all wheel drive. So far so good with all wheel drive and all season tires.

Driving down south in winter is a really risky proposition. I've had some really touchy trips there through ice and snow. Mostly trying to keep from hitting southern drivers who for the most part have no clue. They just don't have much practice in it. Add to that the southern states just don't invest in snow removal or sanding and salting equipment. With the exception of Virginia. Virginia used to do a better job than Pennsylvania.
The rest of the south has a saying about snow and ice "What the good lord puts down, the good lord will take away"

Habebe, a really good ABS system works best but there are limitations as in everything else. If you don't leave enough room in front of you to stop on ice or snow you are still going to crash into someone or something.

We have mandatory winter tire laws between november and through march and to even get a drivers license you have to do a ”slipping” course on a special track.

Nimatzo, in just two snow states, New York and Pennsylvania there are over 20 million licensed drivers. California has 27 million licensed drivers. Can you imagine the time it would take to test everyone of them???

Down south 1" of snow is enough to shut down whole cities. When I used to deliver carpet to Dalton Ga. I had 5 to 6 different stops. Luckily one of them was to a place where the owner lived on the property and would peddle my whole load to the other stops if it was a snow day. Otherwise I'd have to spend a day waiting for the others to open. Ga. had NO snow removal equipment or salting or sanding equipment.

Yeah the South can't handle snow. But at least they're better than California, where RAIN can seriously fuck traffic up. Bunch of spoiled pansies over there on the West Coast.

Boston and new york drivers have by far the most driving skill in the country.

Weak drivers are often scared on those roads, but it produces the best, if you survive.

In the world, the crazy latin american drivers are our equals or even better, but euros and asians are far far worse.

Are you drunk? The skill it takes to cross all lanes of an interstate with only 15 feet of separation between the cars to your front in rear make Boston drivers the best in the country.

As someone who actually lives in Fort Worth, a few points to make:

1) This is THE freeway in Fort Worth for commute. The road was not pre-treated for ice even though the city knew ice was coming. That's being investigated.

2) Ice in the south is a very different beast from wintry conditions in the north. It's thin, it's slick, there's no texture to it. Even northerners accustomed to driving in extreme winter conditions frequently comment that moving to a southern state quickly taught them that they CANNOT drive on southern ice.

3) As a continuation of 2), all businesses should shut down during the one or two days a year in Texas that we have ice. This is the reason why the southern states often shut down in wintry conditions. I blame employers for staying open and forcing these people to go to work (who often have negative repercussions if they call in on an ice day).

4) I-35 has recently been redesigned in a massive project that basically divided the freeway in half, one for "express lanes" (ridiculous toll roads that can cost up to $15 a day to travel a few miles on), and two of the "original" lanes that are still free to drive but are now narrow with no shoulder and surrounded by cement barricades for miles and miles.

This redesign is universally regarded as horrifically bad. It's dangerous. It's terrifying to merge, terrifying to exit, terrifying to drive on. There. Is. No. Room. For. Error.

Everyone was driving at speeds of 40-50 mph, considerably lower than the speed limit, but with that much traffic, it's always a deadly situation.

NYC drivers are pretty good once you get used to them. You learn to observe them and they are predictable for the most part.

Mass. drivers haven't got a fucking clue what the hell they are doing.

A special shout out to Nova Scotia Drivers. They are suicidal and want take someone with them.

Kentucky drivers, especially around Louisville should never be allowed on an interstate.

Virginia drivers have no idea what fucking lane they should be in when they are driving slow.

Most of my driving in Texas was either on I-20 or I-40 never had much problem there.

I only had to drive in smog once in Calif. Came down off Tehachapi heading up the San Juaquin valley. Fucking people passing us like crazy and disappearing almost instantly. It is the only time in my life that I needed to be guided into the Truck Stop by CB radio. Hell we fueled the truck and then had to call on the radio to see which direction to walk into the office. If I remember that day there were two multiple crashes north of us, one was over 70 vehicles and the other was over 90.

Nimatzo, The slipping course is actually a good idea we could adopt here.

Shit, in SC here isnt even inspection anymore, if your car runs and its insured you can drivw it.

Its clear that you're the one who had no idea what he was doing when driving in Mass.

It's understandable of course. Noobies to a new game always feel outclassed by the pros around them.

How to drive in boston and NYC:

Its simple. The speed limit is the speed of the vehicle in front of you, never less. If you are not willing to maintain this speed, stay the fuck to the right.

Half a second between vehicles is the appropriate trailing distance on a modern well made interstate.

To merge in traffic, find a nice spotless vehicle and move in front of them. Preferably a bmw or other weenie wagon. They will give way.

Honk mercilessly at the weak and those distracted by smartphones at greenlights.

Rugian and Sam. I have more miles backing up than the pair of you have driving forward. I managed to get through and around Boston and that area probably before you even had a drivers license, I did it with a rig pulling a 45' trailer.

I swear in Dallas a turn signal was something used to brag about having just cut someone off. My commute was about seven miles and most days the quickest route meant crossing what was at that time three of the top ten most dangerous intersections in the country.
Kaylana is correct the ice down there is different a lot of the time. Poorly designed road system, bad (in my opinion) drivers and bad ice leads to all kinds of accidents. The one here was really bad.

NYC has the fewest licensed drivers per capita in the country. One reason is renting a place to park your car is as much as people renting an apartment in other parts of the country.
another reason is the cost of insurance.

Both systems are shit, and NYC's is now a great place to get assaulted thanks to DeBlasio's soft-on-crime administration.

Not to mention, public transit's viability is now permanently marred by Covid. Like I'm going to spend half an hour in an enclosed train car with a bunch of potentially diseased people.

Yup. There is no reason for civilized people to use public transit. Before covid it was acceptable when drunk, but now not even that is ok.

On this subject of southern cold, texas is quite screwed at the moment. This is one of the greatest cold snaps in their history, creating record electricity demand...

...but...

Its so cold natural gas in the pipelines is freezing, sending at least 50 combined cycle cores offline due to simple lack of fuel. Half the states wind turbines are frozen solid and most home solar panels are covered with snow. Some 30GW of power is gone at their moment of record demand.

Bahahaha.
