I lived most of my life near Philly and this almost never happened.

When I lived in Dallas I kept my ass home if it snowed or we had ice. They really have no clue how to drive in that stuff. Monument Hill on I-25 in Colorado has had some really bad multi vehicle accidents in the past because of ice and blowing snow.

patom Member	Fri Feb 12 04:56:29 I tell all the kids starting to drive in winter conditions to pretend (boys) balls are mounted on the soles of their feet, (girls) that they are giving themselves a mamogram with their feet. You try like hell to give yourself as much room as possible between you and other vehicles. I haven't bought snow tires in 30 years. But for the last 12 years I have had all wheel drive. We just traded our Subaru Legacy after 11 years on a Hyundai Kona. Both all wheel drive. So far so good with all wheel drive and all season tires. Driving down south in winter is a really risky proposition. I've had some really touchy trips there through ice and snow. Mostly trying to keep from hitting southern drivers who for the most part have no clue. They just don't have much practice in it. Add to that the southern states just don't invest in snow removal or sanding and salting equipment. With the exception of Virginia. Virginia used to do a better job than Pennsylvania. The rest of the south has a saying about snow and ice "What the good lord puts down, the good lord will take away"

patom Member	Fri Feb 12 10:30:34 Nimatzo, in just two snow states, New York and Pennsylvania there are over 20 million licensed drivers. California has 27 million licensed drivers. Can you imagine the time it would take to test everyone of them??? Down south 1" of snow is enough to shut down whole cities. When I used to deliver carpet to Dalton Ga. I had 5 to 6 different stops. Luckily one of them was to a place where the owner lived on the property and would peddle my whole load to the other stops if it was a snow day. Otherwise I'd have to spend a day waiting for the others to open. Ga. had NO snow removal equipment or salting or sanding equipment.

Kaylana Moderator	Fri Feb 12 15:28:24 As someone who actually lives in Fort Worth, a few points to make: 1) This is THE freeway in Fort Worth for commute. The road was not pre-treated for ice even though the city knew ice was coming. That's being investigated. 2) Ice in the south is a very different beast from wintry conditions in the north. It's thin, it's slick, there's no texture to it. Even northerners accustomed to driving in extreme winter conditions frequently comment that moving to a southern state quickly taught them that they CANNOT drive on southern ice. 3) As a continuation of 2), all businesses should shut down during the one or two days a year in Texas that we have ice. This is the reason why the southern states often shut down in wintry conditions. I blame employers for staying open and forcing these people to go to work (who often have negative repercussions if they call in on an ice day). 4) I-35 has recently been redesigned in a massive project that basically divided the freeway in half, one for "express lanes" (ridiculous toll roads that can cost up to $15 a day to travel a few miles on), and two of the "original" lanes that are still free to drive but are now narrow with no shoulder and surrounded by cement barricades for miles and miles. This redesign is universally regarded as horrifically bad. It's dangerous. It's terrifying to merge, terrifying to exit, terrifying to drive on. There. Is. No. Room. For. Error. Everyone was driving at speeds of 40-50 mph, considerably lower than the speed limit, but with that much traffic, it's always a deadly situation.
patom Member	Fri Feb 12 17:31:57 NYC drivers are pretty good once you get used to them. You learn to observe them and they are predictable for the most part. Mass. drivers haven't got a fucking clue what the hell they are doing. A special shout out to Nova Scotia Drivers. They are suicidal and want take someone with them. Kentucky drivers, especially around Louisville should never be allowed on an interstate. Virginia drivers have no idea what fucking lane they should be in when they are driving slow. Most of my driving in Texas was either on I-20 or I-40 never had much problem there. I only had to drive in smog once in Calif. Came down off Tehachapi heading up the San Juaquin valley. Fucking people passing us like crazy and disappearing almost instantly. It is the only time in my life that I needed to be guided into the Truck Stop by CB radio. Hell we fueled the truck and then had to call on the radio to see which direction to walk into the office. If I remember that day there were two multiple crashes north of us, one was over 70 vehicles and the other was over 90.

If you are not willing to maintain this speed, stay the fuck to the right. Half a second between vehicles is the appropriate trailing distance on a modern well made interstate. To merge in traffic, find a nice spotless vehicle and move in front of them. Preferably a bmw or other weenie wagon. They will give way. Honk mercilessly at the weak and those distracted by smartphones at greenlights.

My commute was about seven miles and most days the quickest route meant crossing what was at that time three of the top ten most dangerous intersections in the country. Kaylana is correct the ice down there is different a lot of the time. Poorly designed road system, bad (in my opinion) drivers and bad ice leads to all kinds of accidents. The one here was really bad.

This is one of the greatest cold snaps in their history, creating record electricity demand... ...but... Its so cold natural gas in the pipelines is freezing, sending at least 50 combined cycle cores offline due to simple lack of fuel. Half the states wind turbines are frozen solid and most home solar panels are covered with snow. Some 30GW of power is gone at their moment of record demand. Bahahaha.
