US military says a third of troops opt out of being vaccinated, but the numbers suggest it's more

(CNN)Despite a massive effort by the Pentagon to promote the safety and efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines, the US military's opt-out rate for vaccinations may be far higher than the 33% figure defense officials have used publicly.

Conversations with military medical officials and service members, as well as data from several bases and units around the country, suggest the current rejection rate may be closer to 50%.
"I think the true opt-in rate right now would probably be around 50-ish percent," said a military healthcare source about numbers on a military base of some 40,000 active duty troops. The source spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss vaccinations.

A second military healthcare source covering a different region told CNN of the same trend. Those percentages are "consistent" with what they're seeing, the source told CNN.

What the fuck is this. Mission accomplishment first, troop welfare second. That's doctrine. Nowhere in there is an "opt out" clause, or an "emotional needs conspiracy theory" addenda.

You stand in a line.

You step forward. 3 shots in your left arm, 3 shots in your right, all at same time, boom done.

You step forward again. 3 more in your left, 3 more in your right, and bam you're vaccinated.

There was never a fucking vaccine-specific line-item consent form where you get to check "yes" or "no" for each.

You get your gona-herpa-cypha-aids shots, or you get kicked out of the military.

The Pentagon should have spent ZERO resources "to promote the safety and efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines." Has so much changed since 2001?

Hell, no one asked me if I wanted to go to the dentist. You were told to go. If the dentist felt the unit's mission readiness would be enhanced by painting your #14 tooth pink, then your fucking #14 tooth was painted pink, you didn't get to opt out because you believed a conspiracy theory (but you could refuse, and be discharged other than honorably, granted).

Its the "emergency use" that gives the leeway. The US military has a history of voluntary, experimental drugs that theoretically could be opted out of.

But try to opt out while in line and told to place pink pill in mouth...

That may have changed :)

These are not experimental and as sad as I am to agree with earthpig, he's correct here. There should be no opting out.

Unfortunately, vaccine hesitancy is embedded in many wealthy nations.

The numbers in the U.S. are significantly better than the E.U. Last month, in collaboration with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the RECOVER Social Sciences team published a policy brief based on their study on public views of Covid-19 vaccination. The study covered seven European countries: France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Ukraine.

Only 36% of the surveyed Europeans strongly agree with the statement that vaccines are safe. Posed the question whether respondents would be willing to be vaccinated if the vaccine was found to be safe and effective and provided free-of-charge, only between 44% and 66% answered in the affirmative. Moreover, a separate poll in France found that only 40% of French people want the Covid-19 vaccine.
