Right now the fight is over so-called "assault weapons," which kill virtually no one on a statistical level, but which look scary and are usually involved in high-profile incidents. They've become the area of focus for gun control lobbyists, so most of the political capital in the gun debate is currently being expended on them.

If you ban assault weapons, you can move on to banning other things. A generation from now, AWs being banned will be the "norm," so the pro-gun control crowd won't have to expend any political capital on them anymore, and can instead instead focus on something else, like maybe calling for a ban on handguns. And so the incremental path to banning guns continues.

You really come across as someone who has never even bothered to read up on the arguments of this issue.
