Fauci vs. Rogan: White House works to stomp out [vaccine hesitancy]

BY NATHANIEL WEIXEL - 05/02/21 06:00 AM EDT

The Biden administration is working to stamp out [vaccine hesitancy] that might dissuade people from getting coronavirus shots, a crucial task as the nation shifts into the next, more difficult phase of its vaccination campaign.

The White House announced Friday that 100 million Americans are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but the nationwide rollout is plateauing as fewer people sign up for shots.

Administration officials and health experts know the difficulty ahead in getting vaccines into as many people as possible, and are trying to eliminate the barriers to doing so.

Authorities need to dispel the legitimate concerns that make people hesitant, while also stopping [Removed] misinformation.

This past week, top infectious diseases expert Anthony Fauci [disagreed with] Joe Rogan, a popular podcast host [Removed], after Rogan said young healthy people don't need to be vaccinated.

“You're talking about yourself in a vacuum,” Fauci said of the podcast host. “You're worried about yourself getting infected and the likelihood that you're not going to get any symptoms. But you can get infected, and will get infected, if you put yourself at risk.”

White House communications director Kate Bedingfield also joined in the criticism.

“Did Joe Rogan become a medical doctor while we weren’t looking? I’m not sure that taking scientific and medical advice from Joe Rogan is perhaps the most productive way for people to get their information,” she told CNN.

Rogan's comments were trending on Twitter for two days before he attempted to walk them back.

“I'm not a doctor, I'm a f---ing moron, and I'm a cage fighting commentator ... I'm not a respected source of information, even for me,” he said.

Public health experts said Rogan's comments were irresponsible, and potentially dangerous because they could perpetuate hesitancy.

“You have a responsibility as an adult, you have a responsibility as a community leader, your responsibility as a communicator to get it right,” said Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association.

While Rogan is not a political figure, he has one of the most popular podcasts in the world, and an enormous platform.

Rogan hosts the most popular podcast on Spotify. Rogan said in 2019 that his podcast was being downloaded 190 million times per month.

[Removed]

“It's not so much that Joe Rogan's a comedian, he's very popular with people sort of leaning on the conservative side, especially young people. And that's the group that we have to reach, especially young men,” said Peter Hotez, a leading coronavirus vaccinologist and dean of Baylor University's National School of Tropical Medicine.

Hotez, who has appeared on Rogan's show in the past, said he thinks the host was just misinformed. Hotez said he has reached out, and wants to help Rogan have a more productive discussion about why it's so important for everyone to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Polls show vaccine hesitancy is declining, but the holdouts are not monolithic, and experts believe trusted messengers will be needed.

“I just think they have to speak the facts. You speak the facts, and anytime you discover the facts that are incorrect, you try to correct them,” said Benjamin. “And ... I don't think you demonize the individual, nor do I think you try to pin motive to it, because you don't know what the motive is.”

Some people are most worried about side effects, some are concerned about the safety of the vaccines and some people don’t think COVID-19 is a problem at all. There are also likely some people who will never be convinced, and try to sow confusion and distrust.

Biden administration officials [trying to combat what they characterize as the] harmful impact of misinformation, but know they are walking a fine line between people who legitimately want more information and those who just want chaos.

“We know that people have questions for multiple reasons. Sometimes because there's misinformation that they've encountered, sometimes because they've had a bad experience with the healthcare system and they're wondering who to trust, and some people have just heard lots of different news as we continue to get updates on the vaccine, and they want to hear from someone they trust,” Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said during a White House briefing.

For the White House, using medical experts like Fauci to correct [what they perceive to be is] misinformation is part of the strategy to boost vaccine confidence.

“Our approach is to provide, and flood the zone with accurate information,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday. “Obviously that includes combating misinformation when it comes across.”

The administration has also invested $3 billion to support local health department programs and community-based organizations intended to increase vaccine access, acceptance and uptake.

Still, experts said different messengers are needed, especially when trying to reach conservatives who may now view Fauci as a polarizing political figure.

“There needs to be a better organized effort by the administration to really understand how to reach groups that are identified in polls as saying they won't get vaccinated,” Hotez said. “We need to figure out how to do the right kind of outreach with the conservative groups. [Hotez furthermore opined that] "we've got to do something about” [what he characterized as] the damage caused by members of the conservative media.

In a recent CBS-YouGov poll, 30 percent of Republicans said they would not get the vaccine and another 19 percent said they only “maybe” would do so.

The underlying mistrust comes after a year in which Trump and his allies played down the severity of a virus that has killed more than half a million Americans already. [The Biden administration has similarly contributed to the public mistrust by playing down the efficacy of the vaccines and insisting that fully vaccinated people still cannot congregate with each other indoors without wearing masks. Mass media also shares some of the blame through its continued insistence that individuals should take heed of Covid-era restrictions even after getting vaccinated, thereby undercutting the argument for getting the shot in the first place].

A national poll and focus group conducted by GOP pollster Frank Luntz showed Republicans who voted for President Trump will be far more influenced by their doctors and family members than any politician.

To that end, a group of Republican lawmakers who are also physicians released a video urging people to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

The video, led by Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), features some of the lawmakers wearing white coats with stethoscopes around their necks speaking into the camera.

The important thing is that Joe Rogan will correct himself when wrong, invite an expert over to educate him and the audience he misled. He is known for doing this and to not be a lying piece of shit. This integrity and his honesty, especially about his own ignorance, has made him untouchable.

Rogan plays a character. He knows his audience is a bunch of dumbass young, reactionary men. So he often gets himself into controversy by repeating their inherent biases.

Part of that success is his interest in a wide variety of subjects and an ability to navigate those topics, without being a dishonest piece of shit. It isn't the money that has shielded him from the cancel culture people, that helps, but it is mostly the fact that you can trust him to, not be a lying piece of shit who will never correct his own mistakes.

We should wish that more people were aware of how stupid and uneducated they are as Joe Rogan is.

hot take by Candace Owens:
"
The mainstream media promoting Bill Gates while admonishing Joe Rogan is the reason nobody trusts journalists anymore.
Hate to break it to you but they are equally as qualified to talk about vaccines.

Being a billionaire doesn’t make you a doctor.
"

...of course if you've ever listened to Bill Gates talking, you can tell he's massively informed on the issue & thus way more qualified than Joe Rogan

tw, Gates is very informed about vaccinne but also has majot conflicts of interest and routinely just sides with big Pharma.

Also with all of his philanthropy he rarely helps the US, kind of hard to trust a guy who openly puts foreigners ahead of Americans.

He also knows less than he thinks he does as his bouts with Elon demonstrated.

That said I wouldnt take medical advice from either of them as 100% accurate.

Although out of the two Rogan seems much healthier.

"No he isnt"

please show a clip of Gates sounding like he's just making shit up or show a clip of Rogan sounding like he's studied on the issue

Rogan is not where anyone should get their vaccinne or any medical advice outside of maybe workout/excersize stuff.

Gates through his private gates foundation has experience dealing with 3rd world vaccinations.I think its been more with like Malaria and such though.

I would imagine though there is some.carry over knowledge.

But he also has made ties within big Pharma which may taint his views to align with them.

I bring this up because lately this has been an accusation why he is against waiving patents on vaxes for covid.

I personally dont know enough abpit it to have an opinion either way ATM.

Rogan does have a lot of very knowledgeable people though who DO know what they are talking about.

I guess people dislike Gates because he comes off as an ivory tower put of touch liberal who thinks he knows better than everyone and has several times been humiliated because of that with Elon.

When Gates said Elon couldnt make electric semi trucks....well anyone who follows Teslas trade shows knows Gates was wrong.

Also when he scoffed at Musk talking about covid equipment because he had no idea what he was talking about....Gates apparently didnt known that Tesla DID in fact make components (batteries?) for said equipment.

Clearly from his talks he knows about it. But my point there was he has a tendency to think he is smarter than he is.

From his talks I wouldn't be able to say he has more knowledge on the topic than Seb.

I mean that sincerely and not a knock at either.

i don't know about Seb, i haven't read vaccine threads here

i'm certain Gates is very studied on the issue & thus idiotic for Candace Owens to suggest since Gates & Rogan are both not doctors, they are of equal knowledge

which seems part of a strange phenomenon amongst the cult, where Dr Atlas & Dr Fauci considered interchangeable as both doctors... (having Atlas as the main medical advisor to the 'president' about a pandemic was fucking nuts... he has zero background on the topic)

& Jared Kushner able to do every job as he's the 'president's son-in-law

& Ben Carson able to lead HUD as he's black

& Ivanka's wedding planner able to head a HUD area as she's black

there was no respect for knowledge or experience ever

" Tue May 04 22:28:49

Seb definitely is more knowledgeable than an average person on vaccines.

I would say Gates is more knowledgeable than Rogan who admits no one should take medical vaccinne advice from. "Im a fucking moron comedian, don't take medical advice from me" (paraphrased)

Kushner in all fairness did pretty good with ME peace deals. Or recognition deals.

Being black and a female seems to be prerequisite for many Biden appointees, or a VP for that matter .

Ben Carson may or may not have any clue about HUD stuff, IDK. But he is much smarter than many people seem to assume he is a successful heart surgeon, so that alone IMO means he is no dummy.
