Kabul attack: Families bury schoolchildren of blast that killed dozens

Afghan families have been burying their children who were killed in explosions outside a secondary school in the capital, Kabul, on Saturday.

More than 60 people, mostly girls, are now known to have died in the attack that hit students as they left class.

No-one has admitted carrying out the attack in Dasht-e-Barchi, an area often hit by Sunni Islamist militants.

The Afghan government blamed Taliban militants for the attack, but the group denied involvement.

The exact target for Saturday's bloodshed is unclear. The blasts come against a backdrop of rising violence as the US looks to withdraw all its troops from Afghanistan by 11 September.

The neighbourhood in western Kabul where the blasts occurred is home to many from the Hazara minority community, who are of Mongolian and Central Asian descent and are mainly Shia Muslims.

Almost exactly a year ago, a maternity unit at the local hospital was attacked, leaving 24 women, children and babies dead.

Emotional scenes

The first burials took place at "Martyrs Cemetery", where Hazara victims are laid to rest.

Mourners in a state of shock watched in grief as the girls' bodies in wooden coffins were lowered into graves, AFP news agency reported.

One of the residents of the area was quoted by AFP as saying: "I rushed to the scene and found myself in the middle of bodies

"All of them were girls. Their bodies piled on top of each other."

The explosions are believed to have been caused by a car bomb and two improvised explosive devices planted in the area.

One survivor, Zahra, told reporters she was leaving the school as the blasts took place.

"My classmate died. A few minutes later there was another explosion, and then another. Everyone was screaming and there was blood everywhere," she said.

I don’t get it. What is the point of massacring children? Does the sunni muslims feel better and more manly when they murder little children?

Yeah it would have been better if they just sent them off against tanks with "keys to heaven"...

Again, the difference being this was probably condemned by the government's and an act of crazy fanatics.

It was the Israelis who started it with provocations. Israel/Netanyahu wanted the conflict to start again.

But at the least Hamas did not kill children and babies like ISIS is doing and like Israel did. This night Apartheid Israel killed 8-10 children.

Uhm, yes? Even taken at face value, sending children to suicide the enemy, is objectively better than massacring little school girls in their school. You understand why the kill school girls (not the first time)? To scare the other parents straight, so they keep their girls uneducated and raise them to become good traditional muslim women.

Yea, I think sending the little boys into battle with some foolish objective, as horrific as that sounds to my Swedish sensibilities, I prefer that over blasting little school girls to pieces. I am old fashioned.

Fair enough. My larger point is though that I separate Sunni extremist terrorists from their governments.

As I separate US terrorists from our government ( well, thats another whole can of worms, bit you get my point)

With Iran, the government actively works with and supports Hamas.

The prince of SA, the Egyptian government etc. Do not fund, train and work with ISIS.

I take a similar stance to Iran as the Iranians do to me.

They are very clear they do not hate the average Joe American. They hate our government which is a long and sordid history with mistakes and wrong doing on both sides.

FYI- Oddly enough, Hamas is.calling for Iranian/Saudi unity over Isreal/PA issue.

Its odd because Iran is the main reason that Israel and the Sunni nations have united.
