Utopia Talk / Politics / Why do white ppl love camping?

And not others? Yes clearly there are exceptions to the rule. Even hunting. Growing up I only knew one black hunter, he was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping etc.

But most people I knew growing up hunted/fished etc.

The only non white exception I've noticed seems to be Polynesian people, ut I also dont know too many in all fairness.

State and national parks seem to be heavily.favored by white ppl too.

Lots of reasons. You need money, lack of education, crime and loud noises arent tolerated the way they are in cities, if you fuck up theres no government agency to immediatly give you a handout, etc etc.

A quick google later...

I found two associations for black hunters.

Nimatzo, Yes they exist, as dies Yao Ming, but atleast in the US camping/hunting is a whiter activity than Hockey.

IDK about Europe, but in the US therebis a sizeable amount of "outdoorsman" and women. This encompasses alotnof activities, hunting, fishing, homestreading, camping, hiking, off the grid folks etc.

Rugian, I moved down south a few years ago now, and even down here its rare to see outdoorsy black people im areas with majority rural/semi rural black people.

Defintley more black fisherman than up north though, but for how many of them live here the % is still almost nil.Hunters/campers still seem over 90% white. I have noticed a lot more females today then when I was growing up, that's cool.

I’m not a racist or anything but I have never seen black people camping. Like sleeping in tents by the lake, fishing, and cooking at the campfire. I don’t know, but maybe most blacks are city folks and they are more into playing basketball and rapping than camping.

My wife has about as dark of skin as possible but we love camping and do it often. In fact, we just finished a weekend trip for Memorial Day. Although she's from the Caribbean (Trinidad & Tobago) and not an African-American.

We rarely see many on our road trips.

If I had to venture a guess, it's partly because they don't want to be in the wilderness surrounded by a bunch of white people.

I'll ask her today though, she might have some insights.

Of course thet exist, you already said you had seen one. The point was, they exist in such numbers that there are 2 associations for them. Where you aware of that?

Nimatzo,I think if anything they are groups to encourage more due to the lack of them.

In the last 20 years ive seen a huge rise in females doing such activities, so we're expanding that way.

I do remember Nimi talking about wanting to join a hunting club.

I asked my wife and she pretty much confirmed what I thought. African-American people aren't comfortable in the wilderness surrounded by a bunch of white people.

She doesn't mind camping, but part of that was being raised in the Caribbean where such a mentality doesn't exist. We do get a fair amount of racism thrown our way on the road, but don't let a few rotten apples taint our experience.

There was one time when we were camping in an Airstream (stationary, found on AirBnB) near a state park in TX where we had to leave in the middle of the night because a bunch of local hicks were planning on fucking us up.

Thankfully we had a second car and they didn't know it was ours. They had sabotaged my Mercedes but much to their chagrin we got out with my wife's Volvo (really we share both cars, but she likes the Volvo and I like the Mercedes).

Not exactly sure what they were planning on doing, but they were planning something nasty for the morning (overheard them planning it at a get-together).

Nhill, I could see that playing a role.

Usually when camping im generally alone with my party.

Generalizing a bit but white people aren't dodging bullets in their own neighborhood and are not worried about getting jacked up going to the corner store.
We go camping for a bit of excitement.

That aside I for the most part have the opinion if you are using electrical devices you are not really camping. I used to like hitting the back country for about two weeks with only what I could carry in my pack. Now I prefer a tent in one location and day hiking.

We used to go to this place in NJ, it was an old limestone quarry, so the water was crystal clear.

I figure their are probably a lot of reasons. I grew up going fishing atleast weekly and went on camping trips in scouts.

Im not saying we need some government Commission to make sure we have an appropriate % of people, but I think it would be good if we had a wider variety of cultures (not just by race) involved in all sorts of related activities, even off the grid homesteading sort of stuff.

I prefer tents too, but with 5 kids and an RV often I get overridden. Although this upcoming weekend I'm camping in Washington with an old friend. Real back country stuff. Can't wait.

Yeah families tend to do that to you. I don't have kids but the family members I did go camping with have decided RVs or campers are the way to go. My brother got a pretty nice 5th wheel camper but I don't like it because they always have the generator on.
I have a large three room tent I only set up once in the backyard to see how to set it up. Right after I got it was when people decided tents were not the way to go.

My brothers adopted son might could use it. His children are getting old enough to camp using a tent without to much drama.

My dad was an RV mechanic growing up so, we usually did use an RV for family trips.

But family camping/glamping is a whole different beast.

We also had a cabin across the street from Lake Wallenpallpak (sp?) , I miss the cabin, plenty of good memories there. My sister had all of these garbage pail kids stickers on the fridge. I remember watching the first episode.of at the time a new show their called "Freinds".

I Google mapped/street view the old cabin, directly across the street from Tafton fire department. My dad and a freind of the family built it.
