But remember, Columbus was evil because he was a FUCKING WHITE MALE. Screw that noise already. Happy Columbus Day everyone!

And Columbus did discover some islands. Discover means to find something unexpectedly. He was expecting to find India. Instead he found some islands. So he discovered them. Doesn't mean he was the first to discover them nor the first to visit. Nowhere has it been taught Columbus found uninhabited islands. The first documented encounter between Europeans and natives on what is now continental United States happened along the coast of South Carolina. The natives had heard how brutal Columbus and others were so they decided to try and scare the Europeans away when they saw a ship anchored. When the captain and a few mates rowed ashore they were captured, cooked and eaten on the beach. The natives were not cannibals but they thought the act would be so heinous that the Europeans would leave and never return. The incident was recorded in two separate journals.

So I guess The Children getting his first pay check wouldn't technically be a discovery as he would expect to get a check if he got a job. Finding some loose change in his sofa could be a discovery though. Many people discovered Venus independent of each other. Only one was the first to discover Venus. Once some guy in the village says hey I discovered some thing that looks like the moon but a lot farther away and the local paper says hey look what this guy found anybody else in that village is only observing Venus even if for the first time as for them it has been discovered. But Happy Jergul Day anyway. Makes as much sense as any other. But did that happen on this day or are we celebrating Jergul Day this time of year to try and put an end to some other celebration kind of like we did with Christmas?
