Biden says US would defend Taiwan against China invasion

The United States would defend Taiwan if the island were attacked by China, President Joe Biden said Thursday, a declaration welcomed by the democratic island that risks fury from Beijing

At a CNN town hall, Biden was asked whether the US would come to Taiwan's defence if China invaded. "Yes," he responded. "We have a commitment to that."

The United States on Friday sought to prevent an escalation with China, saying there was no change in Taiwan policy after President Joe Biden promised to defend the island from attack by Beijing.

Biden's statement appeared at odds with the long-held US policy of "strategic ambiguity," where Washington helps build Taiwan's defenses but does not explicitly promise to come to the island's help in the event of war.

The White House clarified Friday that it was still guided by the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, in which Congress required the United States to provide weaponry to "enable Taiwan to maintain sufficient self-defense capabilities."

"The president was not announcing any change in our policy and there is no change in our policy," a White House spokesperson said.

"We will uphold our commitment under the act to support Taiwan's self-defense, and we will continue to oppose any unilateral changes in the status quo," the spokesperson said.

I mean for years its been unnoficial that we would defend Taiwan.

I think they are hesitant to state that officially so as not to embolden the Taiwanese into a position where they would encourage conflict....but Im also hopped up on cold meds and cough drops.

We will not defend Taiwan. We will supply Taiwan with modest means of self-defense, but that's it. We're not getting in a hot war with China over Taiwan because that would be stupid in every conceivable way.

Clearly our policy is to keep Taiwan armed just well enough to make it too costly for China to try to take it by force.

That and diplomatic pressure. Nothing more.

If Trump would still be President then Taiwan would pay us trillions for it.

That's right. Taiwan would have to pay us protection money ... and then Trump would turn around and sell Taiwan to China for some favorable business deal for Ivanka. ;o)

You think Taiwan is where the Chinese would stop? Taiwan is just a way for the Chinese to break the risk of maritime blockade. Look at Chinas geography. That whole belt and road initiative is another hedge against the maritime reality that China is facing.

^What Nimmy said.

Taiwan is of great strategic importance to both of us.

They lucked out a bit on geography making it difficult to invade, but not impossible.

Yes?

Taiwan was a part of China. China has never accepted it's independence. I assume you already knew that.

"Taiwan is of great strategic importance to both of us."

Taiwan is of zero consequences beyond the political.

Its worth noting that murder is a Cubano immigrant who thinks that America is some sort of super racist white patriarchal shithole.

Its safe to say that he does not believe in American values, and therefore its not surprising to see him bending over to the Chinese Communists here.

I believe in the American values that have yet to be cemented. As with every other worthwhile thing about the US, it will have to be the result of people cleaning up the mess that earlier generations made.

And I'm sure you give a flying crap about Taiwan and it's people ... but not nearly enough to pick up a rifle to defend it or send your kid to do it for you.

China also calls themselves a "Near Arctic nation" even though its further away than the UK or Germany.

China says a lot of crazy shit.

"China says a lot of crazy shit."

It's as crazy as the assertion that South Carolina is a part of the US.

Yes, killing muslims.

Really we need to expand AUKUS to include a federation

India, Japan, Indonesia and Taiwan as military partners.

On a diplomatic front we need to get nations like Malaysa, Philippines, Vietnam to help them push for SCS claims and develop them to push back and contain China.

"Really we need to expand AUKUS to include a federation"

No we don't. We need to mind our own and let the opposite side of the planet sort itself out.

"It's as crazy as the assertion that South Carolina is a part of the US."

Considering that Taiwan has its own government, military and conducts. Foreign relations without the mainland, no its not the same.

Yes, the USA vs the CSA.

We can dick around all you want like this, bottom line China has no authority over Taiwan.

The commies took the mainland, the nationalists fled to Taiwan and the CCP hasn't been able to take Taiwan ever since.

"We can dick around all you want like this, bottom line China has no authority over Taiwan."

Correct. But if they invade it they will have complete authority. More than the US government has over South Carolina.

And right now China has plenty of authority over Taiwan. Due to China's economic, political, and military might, the world doesn't recognize Taiwan's sovereignty.

It may be an undesirable outcome, but it's hardly crazy talk.

In fact when you said this ...

"Considering that Taiwan has its own government, military and conducts. Foreign relations without the mainland, no its not the same."

That wasn't correct. Taiwan's foreign relations are hardly independent.

" if they invade it they will have complete authority"

If successfully you could say this about almost anywhere.

"That wasn't correct. Taiwan's foreign relations are hardly independent."

How so?

Influence is not the same as authority.
