Justification for a coup.

I'm pissed that its in the $3 range here.If I see $8 gallon for gas I'm dumping a an oil tanker in Boston Harbor.

I am not looking forward to the electricity bill. I need to cover it by putting money in Norwegian and Russian ETFs.

it’s only near $8 in one town that has only one price-gouging gas station

around $4.50 seems the average

Price increased here last Tuesday by twelve cents a gallon. Now costs $3.08.

This winter might be the time for a coup. A lot of people around here heat with propane and the place that sells propane here was telling people back in August they might want to get their propane topped off in September if they could.

Don't care. I have solar and 2 electric cars at the main property. Just alternate them since one of us works from home on any one day. And also solar on the boat.

Fossil Fuels is for chumps.

Tw/y2a , Yes, the article is clear that 8 was one outlier, but that most people were paying around 5.

That's why I posted the link and 5-8 as the high end.Thats still crazy high compared to the rest of the US.

Nimatzo, Curiosity how do you normally heat your house?rough cost?

When I lived up around Philly it was an issue.Down here I just pop on a space heater occasionally, but its rare to drop below 40 farenheight.

I had electric baseboard heat at the one place with really shitty insulation.

Usually I had oil or gas radiator heat, which was cheap, $400 would last me a winter.

We have geothermal brine/water heatpump for the house and an air/air for the garage, so it’s all on the electricity and probably the mostt efficient way and cheapest heat source. Normally average for the year 350 usd/month for electricity less during summers more during winters, but we do have a lot of space to heat and we have yet to have a really cold winter.

I thought about doing geothermal here, we have a pond so we can sort of cheat on installation cost.

And it really gets ungodly hot down here, winters are ok, just too wet.

Read an interesting article not long ago.

Researchers at Purdue University have developed a new ultra-white paint that reflects 98.1 percent of sunlight and can keep surfaces up to 19 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than their ambient surroundings. This new paint, which may become available for purchase in the next year or two

You could with a convector use geothermal for cooling as well. Our installation is not well suited for that because the pipes are not buried down into the bedrock, but buried under the lawn about 2 feet. So ut doesn’t get cold enough to be effective cooling. But good insulation is probably the first thing I would do, otherwise you are just ”burning for the crows” as the Swedish saying goes :)

You use air/air?

Yea, but how often you have to wash it and hiw long does it stick? :)

"but buried under the lawn about 2 feet. So ut doesn’t get cold enough to be effective cooling"

Its all relative, Sweden is far cooler than SC.

The big issue here is the humidity. I have 2 24k BTU window ACs. And 2 little ones (10?).

I only use one at a time and 90% its the main room one.But average is probably 20 gallons of humidity a day in the summer.

As for the paint, I seen they have simple ardiuno based robotic arms to squeegee clean solar panels, if you put a thin clear coat of plastic down on top it will seal in the paint and make for easy cleaning.I mean Im just spiralling, but it seems reasonable.

This was well worth it, the downside is it has to be wired in as a major appliance (220)

Ah, yes AC is the same principle, it lacks the reversing valve so it can only transport the heat one way. So how do you heat for the winter?

"Sweden is far cooler than SC."

The big drawback to this house is that it is exposed to the sun all day and the summers here have gotten warmer for longer, so it gets really hot inside the house, that is why I have tried to come up with a solution. And AC could do the trick, it the top floor that is in need of cooling anyway.

Compounded by the fact that houses here are built to trap heat, so everything is insulated and every window is triple glass... Dam you global warming!

Come to think of it, I dont know anyone who doesn't have AC. My patents and my sister both have central HVAC setups, but they tend to habe higher maintenance issues than I'd like.

Even up north, not having air conditioning would be like not z a phone.

I've wanted to build a shed to grow mushrooms, nothing major, 10x10, the big problem down here is not letting them cook, they recover better from the cold than the too much heat.

Ive been considering surrounding it with soil. Basements are tricky/costly down here due to drainage, it doesn't need to be fancy, a sink and faucet, cinderblock and mound the soil around it and minimal electricity to run the humidifiers and sensors, basic lighting.

Habebe, most of the old tunnels from the Pa. Turnpike are now used to grow mushrooms. They use manure from all the horse tracks and farms as fertilizer. That manure cooks warm so they need to grow the mushrooms in cool dark places.

Yeah, I was a traveling Carni when I was younger for a bit, Jim Houghton enterprises just happened to be located in PAs Mushroom capital, the whole town stinks though.

I'm not a fan of manure.Id rather use birdseed with a grass mixture or brown rice and vermiculite.

Just as good as manure without having to handle shit.
