It's a combination of things.

Delta + morons = new wave

And every time things start getting better, they start relaxing restrictions ... as if the goal was to reverse every positive trend.

And immigration and travel and commerce guarantees that cases will keep coming in from outside.

A lot of things have conspired to make this pandemic this bad.

If you had told me in March 2020 that we'd be creeping up on 800,000 deaths in the US 20 months later, I would have laughed and called you an idiot.

Backward countries having these problems is no surprise, but this should not be happening in advanced countries.

I guess we can throw in the fact that Russia has amassed 100k soldiers on the Ukrainian border.

Putin is either planning an invasion or an epic flash mob.

There are still billions of people with no vaccine, many hundreds of millions of them across North America and Europe.

This means significant numbers of serious cases when tens of thousands of people have it all at once. This is what is happening this autumn/winter across the northern hemisphere. People are fed up with social distancing and much caution has been thrown to the wind. In some cases, social upheaval with the most extreme members of populations.

The time for eliminating the virus and it "going away" have long since passed. Now what we watch for is for it to become no more dangerous (for real) than the common cold/flu on a population wide percentage basis.

This will happen when nearly everyone has either been vaccinated, caught the virus, or in many cases both been vaccinated and then caught a typically minor infection from a variant as well.

Covid19 will never be gone. But it will drop off in serious cases to levels like other former pandemic viruses as the human population gains population wide levels of immunity resistance.

I doubt he invades. At least not the way you're thinking. Odds are it will be an extension of his previous efforts there where they sent in some troops, claim they aren't theirs, use those and ethnic Russian Ukrainians to secure more territory, and that mass of troops will serve as a deterrent to any kind of NATO or European response.

If covid-19 isn't stopped, a lot of people are going to die. It's killing as many as it is, and that's with some restrictions in place. The day there aren't any ...

In the US the flu kills ~ 35k per year over the past decade.

Covid-19 kills that many per month.

We're going to have to expand hospital and ICU capacity permanently to be able to handle all the cases and still have hospitals function normally for non-covid patients.

Murder, Actually I think your spot on about the "invasion". Crimea 2.0.

What's Europe gonna do? Freeze to death?

They know they can get away with it. They got away with the cyber attack on Estonia. They got away with invading Georgia. And they got away with invading Ukraine and annexing Crimea.

One of the great humiliations in US foreign policy history is when George W Bush let the Russians get away with invading Georgia and parading all around that country while Georgia had troops in Iraq as part of our "coalition".

We should have flattened the Kremlin right then and there.

When will Chinese airlines no longer fly to Germany because of our high infection numbers?

http://www...-toll-cathay-pilots-2021-11-26

Nov 26 (Reuters) - One of Asia's largest airlines, Cathay Pacific, is facing a revolt from pilots who say Hong Kong's tough quarantine rules under its zero-COVID policies are endangering their mental health, leading to rising stress and resignations.

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd (0293.HK) last week fired three pilots who breached company rules by leaving their hotel rooms during a layover in Frankfurt and later tested positive for COVID-19.

The government responded by forcing more than 270 people, including school children linked to their families, into tiny quarters at a state quarantine camp.

Some pilots declared themselves unfit to fly for their first rostered duties upon release.
