The new virus variant omicron existed in Europe even before South African researchers first sounded the alarm to the WHO. It shows new lab results from the Netherlands.

South African health authorities alerted the WHO on the discovery of omikron on 24 November. The next day, the news was wired out to the rest of the world through a high-profile press conference in Johannesburg.

On Tuesday, the Dutch research institute RIVM announced that it had found two confirmed cases of omicron in samples taken from patients as early as 19 and 23 November. That is, several days before South African researchers informed the outside world about the existence of the virus variant.

It seems unlikely that the virus spread directly from the Netherlands to southern Africa without infecting more Europeans first.

As far as I know, most of the reported cases are in southern Africa, so odds are that that's where it originated.

It could be true. But doesn’t that mean that covid-19 originated from the US? Because the US has the most reported cases of covid-19 overall, or at the least the most deaths.
