NWS Eastern Region @NWSEastern

Blizzard Warning for Hawaii, and before most of the continental US? Snow accumulations of 12" or more and wind gusts over 100 mph are expected on the summits of the Big Island this weekend. A look at the number of days since each NWS office last issued a blizzard warning.

Maybe it's happened before, but I don't recall ever hearing about a blizzard warning for Hawaii.

When does South Florida get a blizzard warning? :o(

The next polar vortex event which use to be once-in-a-century event and now happens every other year.

Go figure.

...*or* the world is simply more interconnected now than at any other time in human history, which means we hear about every single freak weather event that takes place around the entire globe, which in turn makes such events seem to be more frequent than they used to.

By the way:

"Snow occasionally falls on the highest mountains of tropical Hawaiʻi: Maunakea, Maunaloa, Haleakalā, and Hualālai. We digitized and analyzed monthly Weather Bureau records of snow in Hawaiʻi from 1893 to 1972. In the half-century 1901–1950, Maunakea had an estimated average of one month of snow cover per year. Snow was especially abundant from 1922 to 1940, but was relatively rare from 1908 to 1921. Snow cover may play a role in the formation and preservation of permafrost. MODIS satellite data are used to measure the albedo of the snow surface as a function of its age. Following winters with snow, the ground temperature at 1 m depth is lower than after a winter without significant snow cover, and hence snow cover favors permafrost conditions."

are you denying climate change or just that this event is notable?

pretty sure R opinion has mostly moved from deciding it wasn't real, to deciding it not at all man-made... with now some even acknowledging man-made contribution but deciding nothing can be done about it & a few now deciding maybe it'll be better w/ the change

R's like to just decide what is true rather than use evidence

the important thing is doing nothing at all to help, just like w/ pandemic (at least w/ the cult wing)

"By the way:"

Snow capped mountains is not news, but this is a blizzard with 100 mph wind gusts and an estimated 12" of snow.

I don't think that's typical.

Even so, I assume the weather at lower elevations will be less crazy.

... and here I am in Utah considering if it's time to move to somewhere with more water security as the 3rd winter in a row with 0 snow below the highest mountain peaks, and terrible snowpack on those peaks, is taking shape.

"... and here I am in Utah considering if it's time to move"

Yes.

The answer is yes. :o)

You could move to Florida. It rains there almost everyday.
In Maine we had so called drought conditions most of this summer. But no loss for water. Still lots of lakes and streams. If you want snow there is usually plenty in Aroostook County.

A mountain at nearly 14,000 feet gets snow? Weird. That never happens.
