…athletes.

Yeah he says America will be cheering them from home, but that is not the same thing as being there. Cheering from home is only half-heartedly, done at approximately 50%. Real supporters and patriots, the 100-percenters, goes and watch the games at place. There will actually be no guarantees that Biden or any official will actually watch the games and cheer. Unless of course the media, CNN et al. will live stream from Biden’s home as proof that he and other officials are actually behind the athletes to a 100%.

US announces diplomatic boycott of Winter Olympics in China over human rights

The U.S. will not send an official delegation to the Winter Olympic Games in China early next year, the White House announced Monday, citing China's human rights record.

The diplomatic boycott means that U.S. athletes will still compete in the games, which will start in Beijing in February.

The Chinese government responded with swift condemnation of President Joe Biden's decision -- saying the Olympics shouldn't be "a stage for political shows" and warning of "resolute countermeasures."

But the Biden administration said it would not send senior U.S. government officials because of China's mass detention camps and forced sterilization campaign against Uighurs and other Muslim ethnic minorities in the country's western province -- policies that the U.S. government has determined constitute genocide and crimes against humanity.

Biden has been under growing pressure domestically to take some kind of action against the Beijing games because of China's increasingly authoritarian policies at home and aggressive actions across the region. The decision to not send a delegation stops short of an outright boycott of the games, as U.S. athletes will be participating.

"The athletes on Team USA have our full support. We will be behind them 100 percent, as we cheer them on from home," said White House press secretary Jen Psaki, but the administration didn't think "it was the right step to penalize athletes who have been training, preparing for this moment."

It's the Winter Olympics. Just give Norway all the Cross Country Skiing golds and call it a day.

Yeah, I'm in complete Who Gives a Fuck territory here. People who care about the Olympics are just weird.

Good on Biden though, credit where its due. Fuck China.

This is about the best possible response to be expected no matter the administration. Politics should stay out of the Olympics as much as possible.
Maybe sending a delegation even if not a full delegation in support of the athletes would have been better. They could attend opening and closing ceremonies and basically shun anything outside of the Olympics while in China. Usually if is just the Secretary of State and some ambassador personal friends of the president that attend anyway.
Letting the athletes choose to compete or not is absolutely the right decision with or without delegates.
I've changed my mind he should have done nothing. In the end that is what this will be. The diplomatic team is really just there to wave at the camera if one of our athletes do well. China doesn't give a shit and we the people will forget this move even before the Olympics start. President Biden is just hoping to shut up some critics while doing as little as possible.

To his credit as little as possible actually is the correct answer for this problem.

That's one quick 180 degree turn.

I change my mind. That was more like 120 degrees, which led to a perfectly reasonable opinion ... which is probably where you should have started anyway. :oP

"China doesn't give a shit ..."

If China has proven anything through the years it's that they always give a shit. Even small slights send them over the edge. Biden could have just stopped in Taiwan on his way to China and they would have lost it.

"Didn't the summer Olympics have like the worst ratings ever? Pretty sure winter will sink even lower."

There zero doubt that the Winter Olympics will get lower ratings in the US. Few Americans grow up playing winter sports beyond maybe hockey and snowboarding.

Justin Trudeau announces diplomatic boycott of Beijing Olympics

By Alex Ballingall - Dec. 8, 2021

OTTAWA—Canada will stage a “diplomatic boycott” of the upcoming Beijing Olympics, a move that mirrors action taken by the United States, United Kingdom and Australia that allows the country to participate in the Winter Games while attempting to denounce China’s authoritarian government for its human rights abuses.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the decision at a press conference on Parliament Hill Wednesday. Speaking alongside Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly and Sports Minister Pascale St-Onge, Trudeau said he is “extremely concerned” by China’s human rights violations and that the decision shouldn’t surprise China.

“We have been very clear over the past many years of our deep concerns around human rights violations,” Trudeau said.

He also made it clear that Canadian athletes will still compete in the Games, stating that “our athletes have been training for years … and they will continue to have all of our fullest support.”

Earlier Wednesday, on his way to the Liberals’ morning caucus meeting, Trudeau said the federal government has been mulling how to approach these Olympics for months. That includes conversations with several allies, Trudeau said, including at the Group of 7 summit that the U.K. hosted in Cornwall in June.

“We know that on issues like this it is important to make sure that we are working with our allies,” Trudeau said.

The U.S. was the first country to announce it would not send officials to the Beijing Games. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said at the time that they decision was meant to protest China’s oppression of Uyghur Muslims in the region of Xinjiang, which the U.S. as well as Canada’s House of Commons have declared a “genocide.”

On Tuesday, the new American ambassador in Ottawa, David Cohen, told reporters the U.S. expects Canada to be “aligned” with the Biden administration’s diplomatic boycott.

In recent days, the federal government had made it clear that it would respect the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees’ desire to send athletes to participate in the Beijing Games. In a statement to the Star this week, Canadian Olympic Committee CEO David Shoemaker argued a “full team boycott” would only “hurt athletes and not create any meaningful change.”

He said that, “by attending the Games, we can continue to shine a light on the issues while creating opportunities to inspire Canadians and build people-to-people connections.”

The Opposition Conservatives and New Democrats have also called for nothing more than a diplomatic boycott of the Games, while the Bloc Québécois has said such a move is the least Canada could do. Bloc Leader Yves-François Blanchet said last week that the importance of the Games pales in comparison to the “genocide” China is allegedly perpetrating against Uyghur Muslims.

China, meanwhile, declared Monday that it would respond to diplomatic boycotts with “firm countermeasures.” But so far, the regime in Beijing has not outlined what those might be.

China's response

to US boycott:
"To be honest, Chinese are relieved to hear the news because the fewer US officials come, the fewer viruses will be brought in."

to Australia boycott:
"China has not invited any Australian governmental officials to the Beijing Winter Olympics, whether they come or not, nobody cares."
