An example is Eddie the Eagle from the 1988 Olympics. He was an absolute failure and the US went nuts for him. Probably why we had President Trump. People like to point out how spectacular his failings were before he became president.

He was on all kinds of talk shows, people were buying Eddie the Eagle t-shirts and all kinds of other silly stuff. Jamaica bobsled team another example. Then again maybe we just like wrecks? That might also explain President Trump. You do something with style and flair (doesn't even need be good style) you got a good shot at getting more than just your fifteen minutes in the US.
