Utopia Talk / Politics / Russian sanctions flop

I was called an agent ofnthe Kremlin and the like.

But what have they accomplished?

It seems pretty clear that they hurt the US more than Russia who has a strong currency and is making record oil profits.

Also still winning (slowly at high cost) the war in the ukraine.

First major chink in the dollar's status as a reserve currency. An early sign of the downfall of the US Empire, was fun y'all. Hopefully we can pump another 30-50 years outta it.

The silver lining is that European and Asian currencies are so bad the dollar is still gaining relative strength against a basket of currencies despite it getting slaughtered by the ruble.

One thing we Americans can always count in is Europe monetary always being worst than ours.

They definitely hurt Russia more. But Americans are so entitled that they think a few dollars more at the pump is the end of the world.

And Russia can still maintain relative popular support because their demographic crunch means you can just pay off grandpa ruskie and as long as he can pay rent and have enough money to buy bread a month, he will readily go along with Putin. That's most of the voter base right there.

Dukhat, With all do respect, in what way have they hurt Russia more?

At this moment in time it doesn't look that way.

The US Dollar is down 65% vs the Ruble since March. The market tells you who got hurt more. You'd have to go back to 2015 to see the dollar this weak vs the Ruble.

US sanctions don't hurt Russia much because their economy is so insular and already has significant trade with every other country that has sanctions.

Plus Europe still paying for gas, and in rubles at that

"The US Dollar is down 65% vs the Ruble since March. The market tells you who got hurt more. You'd have to go back to 2015 to see the dollar this weak vs the Ruble."

A bit dishonest dude
The dollar didn't drop in value the russians forced people in russia to buy the ruble and ditch foreign currencies causing the ruble to go up

They are not allowed to sell russian stocks too

If you think that was a bad decision for the value of the currency please feel free to open a FOREX account and short the Ruble vs. the dollar.

Dude you are being a hack claiming USD crashed 65% just because Russia manipulated its currency by forcing people to buy it

Oh look dude, dollar up 27% against the swedish Kronar since Biden's election

They made monetary policy decisions as a reaction to tariffs. Those decisions have worked out well for them. Not sure what else you're looking for here.

"They made monetary policy decisions as a reaction to tariffs."

Ok dude, and once they stop forcing people to buy it against their will - what happens? Once people are not banned from selling russian stocks what happens?

If that was such a genius idea dude, would you be up for banning people from selling american stocks and forcing everyone here to buy the dollar? Do you think there are no consequences to that?

Dollar up 30% against Japanese Yen
http://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=USD&to=JPY&view=2Y

You are crying that Biden is crashing the dollar but it's going up against most other things and saying it's crashed 65% just cause russia has manipulated the ruble by forcing companies in their country to buy it involuntarily.

That's a lot of whataboutism for one post, maybe limit to 1-2 next time, but I'll try my best.

>once they stop forcing people to buy it against their will

They are only accepting payments in Rubles, no reason to stop that policy now that they've ripped the dollar bandaid off.

>would you be up for banning people from selling american stocks

We halt the market in periods of extreme volatility already. But, no, I would not personally support banning selling of stocks as of today. Perhaps circumstances will arise in the future where that would be a good decision.

>forcing everyone here to buy the dollar

How else do you pay your taxes and buy groceries? Are you hoarding pesos or something?

>Do you think there are no consequences to that?

What I actually think is that every monetary policy design has major consequences.

Where am I crying about Biden crashing the dollar? Must have missed that post. I don't think Biden had much of an impact other than continuing the status quo from the previous admin, which also got their rocks off on sanctions.

I'm not a republican. If you're trying to make this about my team vs your team, good luck.

"They made monetary policy decisions as a reaction to tariffs."

Yeah, if the complaint is that Russia manipulated the market to boost the ruble, it was because the West manipulated the market trying to tank it.

You can agree it was a just manipulation due to the invasion. You can not honestly say it went a manipulation.

Russia only acted in reaction.

Pitting Russia against Iran kind of does hurt them both.

Sanctions ended Russian cleptocracy as we knew it. More dollars are going into Russia than leaving it and state owned companies are compelled to sell usd to buy roubles on the Russian currency exchange.

So of course the rouble is appreciating even as dollars help by Russians is going up.

It looks like a binary choice.

Hurt oligarchs or hurt Russia.

"Sam, In what way have they hurt Russia to a greater degree than the US?"

Because russia loses banking and computer chips, while we lose... 20 cents per gallon of gas?

"It seems pretty clear that they hurt the US more than Russia who has a strong currency and is making record oil profits."

Sounds like Russia is loving the sanctions. We should be good neighbors and tighten them further and make them permanent.

You know ... to help them out and all.

Sam, Russia will just buy 2nd rate Chinese chips. Its definitely more than just 20 cents in gas.

I get the intent of the sanctions, but *as of yet* Russia seems better off, we do not.

The Ruble is now the strongest currency in the world.

No dude, it was definitely a dumbass move

Keep sucking trumps orange penis though dude

Maybe back trumps idea of invading mexico, then arrest anyone who talks out against the war, shut down all independent news networks and only allow dudes to watch Fox News, ban selling of american stocks, force companies to dump foreign currencies and hold the dollar, then steal all foreign aircraft and use them for parts and flights

Maybe instead of z your letter can be D for dumbass

Has Biden's sanctions crippled Russia and the Russian economy?
Habebe
Member
Wed Jun 22 01:42:26
"Today, I'm authorizing additional strong sanctions, and new limitations on what can be exported to Russia," Biden said. "This is going to impose a severe cost on the Russian economy both immediately and over time."

Take out who like or dislike. This was a failure.

In the long run, who knows. Bur as of now, Putin outsmarted Biden.

If the Russian currency is so strong, why do they have more than 17% inflation in Russia?
Habebe
Member

1. Strength is relative.
2. It surged up and plateaud.
www.yeswecansong.com

If strength is relative, then the Ruble is much weaker than Dollar and Euro, because inflation is much higher. That's what you just said.

It surged up when the sanctions came, the sanctions are a success, that is what you just said.

3)The price of tea in China.

Please explain how you think the sanctions are a success?

So the sanctions flopped and my favorite cheese is 40% more expensive. I think we need to reconsider this whole thing. I mean how different are Ukrainians really from Russians? Is this really something we need to be involved in?

Ive seen no examples of them working at keast as of yet.

What was the goal of sanctions?

Primarily to make Putin not want to keep invading the Ukraine.

Whether that is because we hurt the economy enough to have people especially oligarchs turn on him.

Or just make it so he can't afford the war anymore.

Either way it isn't working. Perhaps in a longer timeframe. But currently.

Dukhat, How about record profits?
