More than one woman has been killed. I know that at least one was killed while protesting the death of the first one.

Damn! I hope this weekend the regime.

But IDK enough about the specific case to say much more.

The thing is that Iranian people may not like the theocratic regime but they hate the west more.

Amazing what demonizing an entire civilization for half a century and trying to beat 3 generations into poverty or turn them into your vassals will do to their opinion of you

Note pillz lives in the west, and although he has every opportunity to migrate to russia or iran, he in the most hypocritical and cowardly fashion, remains in the west.

"Iranian women burn their hijabs as hundreds protest death of Mahsa Amini"

Context is relevant. Before the current regime, the western-backed King had banned publicly wearing the hijab entirely. That's a big fuck you to the devout, to the more socially conservative, no different than what it would be in the west to ban wearing the Christian cross while mandating mini skirts and cleavage, at the (perceived or actual) whim of some foreign outside power. *Allowing* women to dress as scantily as they want and *mandating* that they reveal more skin than they want, are very different things. One almost reads like the plot of some weird porn film.

The mandatory hijab suddenly isn't so crazy, as a knee jerk to what came before. Patriotic, a marker of independence from foreign influence, especially if you grew up hearing stories about how your grandma was forced to wear more revealing clothing than she wanted, back when she was young. How many generations of American kids were pressured/forced to say the pledge of allegiance, inclusive of "under god," as part of a then overreaching cold war conflict with "atheists" and "heathens."

But so marches the progress of history, new generation, new meanings, new context. I hope the women get the freedom to choose, and if that's the equivalent of having the right to burn the flag or refuse to say the pledge of allegiance, so be it.

"The thing is that Iranian people may not like the theocratic regime but they hate the west more."

I don't think that's true. It's just that the people with power get to decide, and they get to decide who gets to decide next.

You are wrong in thinking that it is not true.

Iranians are not Somalis or afghans. They are not cut off from the world. They travel, study abroad, etc. They see the US specifically, but western politicians as a whole, as persecuting Iran and the Iranian people with sanctions on top of sanctions for ever now, for no reason than Iran wants to be independent. They hate the regime and want change domestically, but also support its national security and geopolitical agendas and goals because they want a strong independent Iran.

It's not hard to understand that you have been fucking them for ever and they don't like it.

"sanctions on top of sanctions for ever now, for no reason than Iran wants to be independent."

The gullibility required to believe this is amazing. You cant think of any reason why the US might justifiably sanction iran?

Things I learned today:

Apparently Iran has female special forces.

Iran deploys female special forces to quell anti-government protests

Elite commando unit dispatched for first time after unprecedented demonstrations broke out over Mahsa Amini death

What is the point of women cutting their hair? Is that going to make the Ayatollahs say: ”Oh no, they are cutting their hair. We resign!”. Maybe Nimatzo can share some insight on how the Iranian women are thinking? Maybe it is a cultural thing.

Lol. I doubt pillz has ever met a Persian in his life. To think they hate the west and love the Iranian government is hilarious. They get Green cards and set up businesses here because America is vastly superior to Iran. They only go back to visit Iran because their have family back home. What a doofus.

50 people has supposedly died in the FLM riots so far. There are also counter-protests now. People are demonstrating for women to dress modestly and to wear the veil.

Honestly, we need to end the sanctions with Iran and Cuba and the rest. The "perma-sanctions: lite edition" just makes them used to it, resilient.

If you drop the sanctions, they will start tasting the milk and honey of trade with the US. And become, to some extent, dependent on it.

And at THAT point, the threat of sanctions, to some extent, will at least have SOME meaning.

Just visualize living standards going up. Now people are used to all this good stuff, and used a higher standard of living. NOW the threats of sanctions have meaning.

EP may have a point.

Could be risky though.

Maybe better to begin to bargain for specific things.

Like set a plan in 3-4 phases. If you do X we will relax sanction y.

The Washington Post @washingtonpost

The demonstrations — outpourings of anger over the harsh strictures on women’s dress that led to Mahsa Amini’s arrest — have spread to all of Iran’s 31 provinces and are the largest since nationwide demonstrations three years ago that killed hundreds.

Strange idea to cast Alinejad, who lives in NYC, as the leader of the Iranian protests that are explicitly being done in the name of a local woman murdered by Iranian police. Alinejad is a US government employee who meets regularly with neocon politicians.

The evangelicals here are studying how Islamic run countries keep their women in line. Right at the present time they seem hell bent on controlling female vaginas, much like cattle ranchers. They like to keep their livestock producing.

"Maybe Nimatzo can share some insight on how the Iranian women are thinking"

I have dated women from several cultures (including Iranian) and I can honestly tell you that I have no idea how they think or if they are doing what could be called "thinking" most of the time. I just find the attractive because that is how I was born.

Feminism! What do you think about that, Nimatzo? Is Iran doomed?

Someone living in NYC doesn’t risk being thrown in jail or killed by Islamic republic agents. The only faces of revolt in Iran, are pictures of people who died the last time.
