I have a Great Aunt in Largo, she is evacuating today to a local church that doubles as a regular storm shelter.

Getting Andrew vibes.

On the current track she seems to have lucked out. Largo will be on the weak side of the storm. And if landfall dips any further south, Largo may not even get hurricane force winds.

Of course the track can always shift north again.

"Getting Andrew vibes."

Getting Charley vibes.

Apparently Tampa doesn't normally get hurricanes but this one is headed straight toward them, so they're especially potentially buttfucked.

Here's hoping for a last minute miss.

Sounds good. Not familiar with the storms that much.

The potential for a clusterfuck is high. The track originally had landfall far to the north. It started out in the panhandle and has worked its way all the way down to ~ Venice. So you know people in the Port Charlotte area weren't really preparing. Now they've got < 48 hours before the storm surge submerges half the area.

"Apparently Tampa doesn't normally get hurricanes but this one is headed straight toward them, so they're especially potentially buttfucked."

The current forecast track has landfall south of Tampa, so unless that changes they won't get hit that bad.

This storm looks very pissed on satellite. Eyewall full of lightning. Pressure plunging. Should be cat 4 or 5 soon.

Far enough from landfall where she might peak too soon.

Jason Disharoon @Jason_Disharoon

Model timing shows the center of #Ian coming onshore at the worst possible time for the folks around Ft Myers and Port Charlotte: High tide

This would make the storm surge threat end up on the higher end of estimates which are 8-12 ft according to @NHC_Atlantic @weatherchannel

Surge should be higher than 12 feet in a few places.

"How far from the eye of the storm to Mar-a-Lago?"

Mar-a-Lago is ~ 130 miles away and a bit to the south ... but it's on the east coast of Florida.

ABC News @ABC

Work is underway to restore power to Cuba, after Hurricane Ian knocked out electricity to the entire island.

The entire fucking island nation.

Yeah, this is a bad storm.

I read 160 MPH (260 KMH) winds.

26 states sent preemptive aid to FLA, 47k lineman, Blackhawk helicopters.

And people wonder why the power goes out.

I'm on the opposite coast.

Apparently Ian is going up your way as soon as it's done fucking shit up down here.

I happen to be looking oit the window while on the phone with my sister and watched a tree fall out front.

Not really much to damage. Id suspected that tree would fall for 2 years now, so Im not surprised.

Easy fire wood, its been half dead for a while.

Flooding is likely to be the significant issue. I think earlier like half the state and a good chunk of North Carolina were under some sort of flash flood warning.

Sam Adams hasn't posted in this thread since the 28th - did he survive?! He's in Florida somewhere correct?
murder

I don't think he is. There's nothing to climb in Florida unless he wants to start scaling buildings.

The death toll is up to ~ 87, so the collective IQ of the state is creeping up.

"so the collective IQ of the state is creeping up."

Explains the shift from a purple state into solid red.
