The Utah-based faith’s doctrine “related to marriage between a man and a woman is well known and will remain unchanged,” the church stated in a news release. “We are grateful for the continuing efforts of those who work to ensure the Respect for Marriage Act includes appropriate religious freedom protections while respecting the law and preserving the rights of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters.” The church’s remarks come after the act’s sponsors added an amendment to the House-passed bill exempting religious organizations, including faith-based universities, from providing “services, accommodations, advantages, facilities, goods or privileges for the solemnization or celebration of a marriage.” Neither could the act be used to alter the tax-exempt status of any organization. The amendment also specified that the measure did not extend to polygamous marriages. “We believe this approach is the way forward,” the church release said. “As we work together to preserve the principles and practices of religious freedom together with the rights of LGBTQ individuals, much can be accomplished to heal relationships and foster greater understanding.” Troy Williams, executive director of Equality Utah, was “heartened to see The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints publicly take this stance today.”
Hrothgar Member	Fri Nov 18 09:46:10 As a former believing Mormon and one still "on paper" as they say, all I can do is L.O.L. at this hypocrisy from this massively rich corporation masquerading as a religion. The anti-gay crusade was about the most important thing in the leader's minds in the 90s-00s. Gay marriage would wreck humankind and bring biblical prophesied disaster they decreed over and over Sunday after Sunday. Only to start realizing in '10s that their rhetoric was so at odds with the reality that it was driving the youngest generations to open their eyes, realize the whole thing was an 1800s fraud, and bail on the religion. By 2020's it's become a full fledged mass exit from the religion across all age ranges compared to anything the religion has experienced before. And THIS is why they changed their tone. The financial implications of losing millions of believers sank into leadership 80 years brains. PS - while they are supporting this federal law, people will still be considered "unworthy" and excommunicated for having gay sexual activity. We'll need 5-10 more years and a couple millions more lost Gen Z to get them to fully embrace the 5% of people who are same sex attracted.
