Utopia Talk / Politics / What is the price of eggs where you live

We just went shopping and paid a little over $8 for 18 eggs. Is this because the Avian Flu has wiped out so many egg laying birds, or just greed?

Biden prices?

So are you saying that Biden invented the Avian Flu?

per this the egg farmers have lost over 57 million laying birds this past year.

It's avian flu. We have grocery stores entirely without eggs. If they do have eggs they limit how much you can buy. Can't blame biden on this one. Just a natural occurrence that sucks.

Eggs have been expensive long before this.

We bought 9 dozen eggs because we found them "cheap" at $5.45/dozen.

I paid $0.55/dozen under Trump at the local Aldi.

Ive been paying over $3, most eggs currently are like $8-9.

Now some of this brings me back to a point where I actually agree with California liberals.

Factory farms, they are dangerous and inhumane. They breed not just avian flu that kills birds, but they can soread diseases that will kill people as well.

Ticking fucking time bombs.

However, if people can blame Covid handling on Trump, you absolutely can blame avian flu handling on this administration using the same logic.

We get 20 eggs for 6 USD so about 30 cent/egg, can probably get them cheaper than that.

In Sweden, the politicians call it ”Putin prices”.

The US eggs are generally sold by the dozen.

I actually had an old thread maybe a year ago or so (maybe longer?) About the price of eggs.

6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16, 18, 20 and 24.

We have a lot of freedom with eggs.

Have they tried treating it with horse dewormer? :o)

Nimatzo, Yeah, that is alot more choice than is common* in the US.

You can buy 1/2 dozen, especially in smaller "mom n pop" stores. And absolutely you can buy in bulk, but even the bulk is usually measured in dozen and half dozen IE 9 and 1/2 dozen.

I miss turkey eggs, we used to know a guy with a turkey farm and got free eggs periodically, maybe it was in my head, but they definitely seemed to taste better, richer.

Have 20 chickens since 2020, so the same price it's been since then

I don't buy eggs frequently enough to track their pricing here.

I'll just assume they're super expensive though, and blame Biden for it

Depending on what/how you feed your chickens the cost of your eggs could have gone up between 10 and 20%.

What kind of hippie shit is feeding chickens? Chickens feed themselves. As long as there are worms and insects and seeds in this world, no chicken will ever go hungry.

Chickens will eat just about anything. I know ppl who routinely feed them vegetable scraps.

Fun fact they are not affected by capsaicin so you can fee them hot pepper scraps.

In much of New England people are keeping chickens as free range. They eat a tremendous number of ticks.

I wouldn't be shocked at a potato shortage by Easter either.

Continue with the triggered Irish sounds.

"Forwyn, Do you live rural?"

Nah, I'm smack dab in the middle of a 100k city, a mile from the university lol

Ordinance requires a property of .5sq mi, I sit on an acre.

They do indeed eat everything, they enjoy fruit and veggie scraps - especially watermelon rinds in the summer.

Yep, the kids enjoy it for Easter. Egg hunts etc. Every so often some asshole adult will slip in a raw egg with the hardboiled eggs.

Forwyn, Cool, I have known alot of people who have jumped on the raising chickens wagon inntheblast few years.

Around Easter Aldi carries these "heritage eggs" which some googling led me to find out they were likely fed a diet high in marigolds, totally different color, like oranger than sunny D and the best tasting store bought chicken eggs Ive ever had.

"I thought painting eggs was a Swedish thing. Didn’t know u do that in the USA also."

Yep ... then we let giant furries visit all the kids and give them candy and hugs.

It's not creepy at all.

Was in the store today and a dozen jumbo eggs were $7.10 a dozen. We get eggs from a local person though so not paying those prices.

Also, French omelette is proving to be my life's most frustrating challenge. All of it has to be soft and yellow, no brown at all, no skin, its like a soft-boiled version of an omelette. And its fucking impossible to get perfect.

Food, booze, weed and cheap material thrills. You are really clinging on to purpose and meaning with the classic hedonistic lifestyle, ain’t ya?

My friend Ahmed that descended into total nihilism was just like you, before he found god. Now he is living a traditional life with a traditional wife and 4 children.

So why not just make a regular omelette?

Because the French omelette is so creamy. The koreans do something similar with chopsticks to achieve the same result

You sometimes see French omelette on gourmet menus when they want to be a bit cocky and give a wink to other food professionals, 'cos they all know that a good french omelette is hard as shit to get right

I call my omelette french farmer omelette. It’s just some egg, a little bit of salt, a little bit black pepper, butter and a teaspoon of water. It's easy.

this is what they should look like. Its like the difference between soft and hard boiled. Once it starts getting crispy, its frittata

Luckily, Ive found a small cafe in Cannes run by a flirtatious girl who looks like she's straight out of a porn movie who does a proper omelette where I get to eat proper omelettes while quietly perusing different ways Id like to tip her
