Argentina withdraws from ‘agree to disagree’ pact over Falklands sovereignty

The Government has insisted the Falkland Islands remain British after Argentina walked away from a cooperation pact and demanded new talks over their sovereignty.

Known as the Malvinas in Spanish, the UK-ruled islands were the subject of a short but brutal war after Argentina invaded in 1982. Britain drove out the invading force after dispatching a naval armada.

In 2016, the two sides agreed to disagree about sovereignty but to cooperate on issues such as energy, shipping and fishing, and on identifying the remains of unknown Argentine soldiers killed in battle.

But at G20 talks in New Delhi on Thursday, Santiago Cafiero, the Argentinian foreign minister, informed UK counterpart James Cleverly his government was abandoning the pact.

In a series of tweets, he renewed Argentina’s longstanding demands instead for negotiations about the sovereignty of the islands and pushed for a meeting at the UN in New York.

“The Falkland Islands are British,” Cleverly retorted on Twitter over Cafiero’s thread.

The decision was announced just as Britain’s minister for the Americas, David Rutley, was visiting Buenos Aires for what he called “productive” meetings.

“Argentina has chosen to step away from an agreement that has brought comfort to the families of those who died in the 1982 conflict,” Rutley tweeted, calling the decision “disappointing”.

“Argentina, the UK and the Falklands all benefited from this agreement,” he said.

Both countries last year marked the 40th anniversary of the conflict, which claimed the lives of 649 Argentinian soldiers, 255 British servicemen, and three women who lived on the island.

The British Navy is a bitch force and Joe Biden won't lift a finger to help if the Argentinians do invade.

Honestly I can't even fault them if they do decide to try for it again. The chances of success are just too high.

Argentinians can't operate modern weaponry even when it's handed to them.

I should hope that you wouldn't find yourself having to fight a prolonged conflict. The Royal Navy is down to, what, 30,000 active personnel?

If Argentina acts up again I would hope that the UK wipes out what there is of their navy and air force ... and disables all their ports and airfields. Followed by maintenance bombings to make sure it's permanent.

Blowing up Argentine ports and airfields can become part of routine UK naval exercises.

Does Argentina have some sort of rivalry with Cuba? Why the hate murder?

Rugian:

I think we can handle a navy that fields three mid sized frigates (3,400t displacement at full load), 7 Corvettes (1,300t), a few patrol boats and a single amphibious warfare ship. Their ships date from the early 80s with little upgrades. Their principle weapon is still the Exocet .

Even in the current state we field 6 air warfare destroyers(8000t), 12 anti surface/submarine frigates (5000t), 6 attack subs. Let's leave aside the f35 equipped aircraft carriers and the amphibious warfare ships.

The entire UK surface fleet has been designed around ensuring the threat of sea skimming anti ship missiles is mitigated. The T-45s are equipped with the best anti -missile radars and missiles systems in the world, all the surface combatants have point defence systems, and all carry sea-ceptor anti-missile systems.

We out-match then in numbers, tonnage, equipment and range of capabilities - far more so than in the 80s.

Argentina just isn't a threat militarily.

Instead, what Argentina will be looking to see is if Brexit and not having the EU foreign policy clout opens up diplomatic and trade pressure routes.

Murder:

They aren't going to try and if they did we just need to sink their amphibious warfare ship.

"Does Argentina have some sort of rivalry with Cuba? Why the hate murder?"

Yeah. Argentina says that soccer is the best sport. Cuba says it's baseball.

But seriously, if they can't behave themselves then they don't need those toys to play with.

"They aren't going to try and if they did we just need to sink their amphibious warfare ship."

They likely won't. But you aren't taking the threat seriously enough. It's only 300 miles to the Falklands and Argentina has a few transport planes to move significant numbers of troops. And at 300 miles pretty much anything that can survive the ocean waves is a troop transport ship. If they were determined enough they could take the Falklands.

murder:

There are four typhoon based on the island, and air defence unit armed with sky sabre, a company of infantry and electronic warfare.

We have satellite reconnaissance and signals intelligence.

Argentina wouldn't be able to do jack shit without us knowing long, long in advance and sending a couple of subs down there.

And we can reinforce the airbase there with further jets pretty quickly.

Their entire fighter airforce consists of 36 upgraded skyhawks from the 90s.
