Utopia Talk / Politics / "High speed rail": Miami to Orlando

Starting later this year locals and tourists alike will be able to zoom between Miami and Orlando (both in Florida for those who don't know) (Florida is in the US for those who don't know) at the blazing fast speed of 130 mph.

Now we're Chinese too. ;o)

Stop laughing! There's just one small problem with these 130 mph trains ... aside from the fact that 130 mph is lol slow for high speed rail. Pedestrians, cars, and trucks, keep getting creamed by these things on existing routes, so the 130 mph is just aspirational.

At least once a week I turn the TV on the morning to find a story about the latest Brightline train crash. My personal theory is that the lack of steering on these trains leaves them unable to dodge the steady stream of morons that you encounter in South Florida.

Here's a link to an old article about this service ...

"New higher-speed Florida train has highest US death rate"

http://apn...73281682ed4cc9bbd33a5fd569d5d5

And no it hasn't gotten any better since that article was written in 2019.

My favorite part of that article is ...

"The first death involving a Brightline train, which officially launched in January 2018, happened in July 2017 ..."

lol :o)

I do love how Floridians primarily view that train either as something to play a game of chicken with or as a convenient mechanism for committing suicide.

Its Florida. Everyone already owns a car, so what do you need to ride a train for? :o

In all seriousness, accidents and suicides are one of the (many) reasons why high-speed rail is untenable in the US.

Here in Massachusetts, our commuter rail struggles to do better than 30 MPH effective speeds on their routes. Part of this is because trains are frequently required to slow down in areas where some accident had occurred 50 years ago. Every time that happens, the impetus is to establish a slow zone that all too often becomes permanent.

This.

We already have the answer for this.

Don't even slow down. Someone will be along shortly to perform the cleanup. No reason to ruin everyone else's day just because someone decided to do just that.

I realize we're also supposed to look at this and say "oh, this is just murder being his usual homicidal psychopathic self"...but honestly? You do kind of need this mentality when it comes to passenger rail.

It's not about passenger rail, it's about assholes. Dead assholes, but assholes nonetheless.

If you want to kill yourself, and most people should sooner or later, then don't be an asshole and create a problem for other people.

There is a reason most of true high speed train rails are elevated in other nations who actually try for this mode of transportation.

Having them cross roads with cross vehicle traffic will always be a disaster with trains moving at high speeds.
