Member | Thu Nov 30 17:25:30 Paramount: For large protests such as this, where it's non violent, they don't arrest people on the spot for operational reasons. Firstly, it creates a risk that people witnessing part of an altercation think the individual is a victim of police brutality and weigh in to try and block the police, so they need/want a large number of officers to deter that. Secondly, once they arrest that person, they need to take them to a detention area and process them. That takes a few officers out for some time. They'd rather keep those officers for handling higher risk/danger crimes, and minimise the risk of sparking lots of violence that endangers their officers and bystanders. Instead they record, identify and arrest later after the event. CCTV coverage in London is sufficiently good they can do this with a high success rate. It takes a few days, but there's really no need to arrest them on the spot of there's no immediate threat. Actual incitement is what triggers intervention normally. |
