Here's a hipster podcast episode I listened to some time ago on when they displaced the natives: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efzS1Jc7TX0

Except the base. Which is all that matters.

Giving up control of those islands is a security threat for Diego Garcia. If the UK can't manage them, then the US should take them over.

Earthpig:

They aren't really natives tbh. They were shipped there 40 years before the UK took over by the French Empire.

Murder:

US signed up to to the deal.

It's an example of the stupidity of this kind of thinking. If we had let the Chagosans settle one of the other Islands, granted them some kind of status, and crammed their mouths with gold, it would have severely blunted Mauritius' claim. US opposed that option in the 90s.

Maintaining security of the US base is a lower priority for the UK than securing African support on a number of other issues. So if you want to invade Mauritius that's your business.

"So if you want to invade Mauritius that's your business."

Not much need to invade. Just claim the islands and tell them to live with it. Although we could probably use another base in the Indian Ocean close to Africa.
