U.S. Blindsides Panama, Saying American Government Ships Will Get Free Canal Passage

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino on Thursday denied the State Department’s claim that his country had agreed to allow U.S. government vessels to transit the Panama Canal for free.

“I am incredibly surprised by yesterday’s statement,” Mulino told a news conference in Panama City. “They’re making an important, institutional statement from the entity that governs U.S. foreign policy…based on a falsity. And that’s intolerable.”

A president who didn't want to get his country invaded would have gone along with the act.

Trump is writing a bunch of checks his ass can't cash. This moron is going to get the US gangbanged by half the world.

If China, the EU, Canada, and Mexico, decide to join forces to take us down, we're in for a very bad time.

But Trump knows what he's doing.

France excavated two thirds of the dirt moved to make the canal. Perhaps it should have dibs if anyone.

"France excavated two thirds of the dirt moved to make the canal."

Completely wrong as usual. Not only did the french fail utterly, very little of their work remaining after a generation of tropical rain... but even if it had not been eroded away their designs were wrong and their steam engines utterly outdated. The US very nearly started from scratch.

To be fair the US benefitted from an extra 20 years of industrial revolution and more importantly the discovery of mosquitos as the cause of disease. Unclear if the US could have done better in 1880.

The President of Panama said it was against their constitution to waive payments to any country.

Its funny how Rugian thinks he will personally benefit from any of this foreign land grabs.

Feel free to edit the wiki page about the pamana canal if you feel that france did not move two thirds of the dirt.

Ships can traverse a French-dug trench in Panama about as well as they can a French-dug trench in Verdun.

Well, it is all moot anyway. France transferred its efforts to the US. The US transferred its efforts to Pamana.
