Utopia Talk / Politics / Democrats are in full meltdown mode

Member | Sat Mar 15 07:37:28 Democrats on Capitol Hill are waging an internal war against one of their own after the GOP successfully muscled through the Senate a partisan spending bill that drew the votes of Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), eight other Democrats and an independent. The clash is pitting most of the party — including virtually every House Democrat — against Schumer, who infuriated members of his party on and off of Capitol Hill by saying Thursday night he would back the measure. The differences over strategy badly split House and Senate Democrats. House Democrats engaged in an active pressure campaign to convince Senate Democrats to vote against the bill, before and after Schumer’s announcement. A number of prospective Democratic presidential candidates, including Govs. Gavin Newsom of California and JB Pritzker of Illinois, also urged Democrats to oppose the bill. The fissure shattered the message of unity Democrats were hoping to convey coming out of their annual strategy retreat this week. It also eroded confidence within the party that Schumer will hold the line to block the Republicans’ agenda in the legislative fights to come — especially after a dozen House Democrats in tough districts voted against the measure Tuesday. Even House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D), a fellow New Yorker, declined to say he has confidence in Schumer’s ability to lead the party heading into the coming fights against the ambitious agenda of President Trump, dealing a blow to him in the process. “Next question,” Jeffries said Friday, a couple hours before a key Senate procedural vote on the measure, when asked about his confidence in Schumer. The dispute was not over the substance of the bill, which all Democrats opposed on its merits, but rather over how party leaders should have best played their cards in the face of a fast-approaching deadline to fund the federal government. A failure of Congress to act would have led to large parts of the government closing their doors at the close of the day Friday. The Democratic critics say the threat the bill poses is existential, granting Trump and Elon Musk new powers to dismantle the federal government and the services it provides. Schumer disagreed, arguing that the greater threat was a shutdown. Fueling the Democratic criticisms, Trump had applauded Schumer Friday morning for helping to get the bill over the finish line. Anything Trump supports, the critics said, is probably a bad idea. http://the...ash-over-senate-spending-bill/ |

Member | Sat Mar 15 07:47:39 In ten years' time, the Democrats' senior leadership will consist of Senator Ocasio-Cortes and Jasmine Crockett. The party is completely in thrall to its activist groups and political donors, both of which encourage extremism and punish moderation. It's how they pushed even a so-called "moderate" like Biden to become a champion of insane far-left bullshit during his time in office. The Democratic Party is completely cooked, and this country is completely cooked if they're ever allowed back into power. |

Member | Sat Mar 15 15:39:52 Schumer realized something those who are pissed at him were unable to see because of their hatred for Trump. Most judges have ruled against DOGE with the reason being they can't take back funds that have already been allocated by congress. A shutdown would bring into question whether funds have been allocated allowing DOGE to start cutting projected funding that the shut down would have failed to authorize. Schumer was one of the few Democrats that looked past one day and saw a more long reaching outcome. |

The issue at hand is that the majority of Democrats wanted to shut down the government as a political play, and Schumer might very well lose his leadership position because he got the CR through at the last minute. |

Member | Sun Mar 16 10:05:20 "The liberal organizing group Indivisible said Saturday it was calling for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to step down from his leadership role, the latest fallout after he backed a GOP bill to keep the government open. The group’s call is the latest sign of just how much Schumer’s decision to vote for a Republican bill Friday has angered a Democratic grassroots itching for a fight with President Donald Trump. Many Democrats saw a potential government shutdown as one of the party’s sole points of leverage on the government funding bill as Trump and Elon Musk have moved to shutter programs and cancel spending previously allocated by Congress. But Schumer and a handful of Democrats aligned with him argued doing so would only give the pair more power, and that the consequences of a shutdown would be worse than the bill. Still, Schumer’s decision roiled Democrats who noted the party had been near-united in the House in opposing it. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries deflected Friday when asked whether he had lost confidence in Schumer, while saying his conversation with the fellow New York Democrat would remain private. The statement from Indivisible, which launched during Trump’s first administration, is a sign that the anger among Democrats extends beyond the halls of Congress. In a Saturday release, Indivisible said 82 percent of its leaders in New York and 91 percent nationwide had voted to call for Schumer to step aside. “After weeks of constituents demanding that Democrats use this rare, precious point of leverage on the government funding bill, Schumer did the opposite,” the group’s co-executive director Ezra Levin said in the release. “He led the charge to wave the white flag of surrender. But Indivisible has no intention of surrendering to Trump, Musk, and congressional Republicans.” A Schumer spokesperson did not immediately respond Saturday evening to an inquiry about Indivisible’s call. But Schumer, asked about possible calls for new leadership in the Senate on Thursday, acknowledged he had made a “tough choice,” adding: “You have to make these decisions based on what is best for not only your party but your country, and I firmly believe and always have that I’ve made the right decision." http://www...er-spending-bill-vote-00232194 |
