Germany's foreign intelligence service, the BND, concluded that the outbreak of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic in 2020 could well have been triggered by an accident at a Chinese laboratory that does virus research, German media reported on Wednesday.

The pandemic caused the death of millions of people across the world from the respiratory illness COVID-19, while fallout from the catastrophe continues to dog global economies and drive social tensions.

Alleged risky virus research methods in Wuhan

According to reports in the German papers Süddeutsche Zeitung and Zeit, the BND based its conclusion on the analysis of material from the public domain and that it collected in the course of an investigation with the code name "Saaremaa."

The material, some of which came from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, located in the Chinese city where the pandemic is believed to have started, indicated that there had been some risky research methods used there, compounded by breaches of laboratory safety rules, the reports said.

The papers said there was evidence that Wuhan researchers carried out so-called gain-of-function experiments, in which viruses occurring in nature are manipulated. Such research can cause changes in the way a virus causes illness, its transmissibility and the types of hosts it can infect.

There were also indications that there had been numerous violations of safety regulations at the lab, according to the reports.

The BND reached its conclusions as early as 2020, the papers said, giving them a likelihood rating of 80% to 95%, but the assessment was kept from the public at the time.

This is more about the complete failure of western media and key institutions to do their jobs and not be deranged by the orange man.

The Lancet letter (also referred to as Calisher et al. 2020) was a statement made in support of scientists and medical professionals in China fighting the outbreak of COVID-19, and condemning theories suggesting that the virus does not have a natural origin, which it referred to as "conspiracy theories".[1][2] The letter was published in The Lancet on February 19, 2020, and signed by 27 prominent scientists, gaining a further 20,000 signatures in a Change.org petition.[3][4] The letter generated significant controversy over the alleged conflicts of interest of its authors, and the chilling effect it had on scientists proposing that the COVID-19 lab leak theory be investigated.[5][6][7]

According to journalist Paul Thacker, the Lancet letter "helped to guide almost a year of reporting, as journalists helped to amplify Daszak's message and to silence scientific and public debate." This affected reporting on the origins of the virus, "characterising the lab leak theory as unworthy of serious consideration".[9]

White House pressed Meta to censor COVID-19 posts on lab leak theory and vaccine hesitancy, internal emails show

Mon, July 31st 2023 at 3:52 PM

WASHINGTON (TND) — The Biden White House is under fire again for pressing social media companies to censor speech the administration doesn't agree with.

During the height of the pandemic two years ago, Facebook allegedly took down COVID-19 posts supporting the lab leak theory and vaccine criticism after receiving pressure from the White House.

“Can someone quickly remind me why we were removing -- rather than demoting/labeling -- claims that Covid is man made," Nick Clegg, who is the company’s president of global affairs, wrote in one email.

A Facebook vice president reportedly responded, “We were under pressure from the administration and others to do more.” The executive added, “We shouldn’t have done it.”

Even satire was at risk of censorship.

According to the Meta emails, a senior White House official was outraged Facebook didn’t remove a meme poking fun at vaccines.

Reporters pressed White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on the allegations.

“We have consistently made it clear that we believe social-media companies have a critical responsibility to take account of the effects of their platforms that they have on the American people, while making independent decisions about the content of their platforms,” Jean-Pierre saidduring Thursday's briefing.
