Utopia Talk / Politics / The mistreatment of Greenland must end

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration raised the temperature with Denmark Thursday ahead of Vice President JD Vance’s trip to Greenland — accusing the Danes of “mistreating” Greenlandic people against the backdrop of President Trump openly talking about annexing the island.

“The Vice President and Second Lady are embarking on a historic expedition with their visit to Greenland, where the Vice President will emphasize the importance of bolstering [Arctic] security in places like Pituffik Space Base,” a senior White House official said.

“Unfortunately, Danish leaders have spent decades mistreating the Greenlandic people, treating them like second class citizens and allowing infrastructure on the island to fall into disrepair. Expect the Vice President to emphasize these points as well.”

The Swedish governments has also spent decades mistreating the Swedish people. Allowing rail infrastructure to fall into disrepair. Among other things.

Vance should come and visit Stockholm after his Greenland visit.

"Trump posts new Greenland video: ‘Now is the time to stand together’

by Filip Timotija - 03/28/25 5:52 PM

“In the cold silence of the tundra, a bond was born not from treaties or trade, but from blood and bravery. While Germany controlled Europe, the Nazis set their sights on the Arctic. Greenland became an unwitting combatant, and the United States stepped in, not to conquer but to protect,” the narrator says in the 90-second video that was released Friday.

“In 1943, nearly 1,000 American soldiers with four chaplains set sail from New York to Greenland, carrying with them hope, duty and a quiet fear. But their ship was torpedoed by a Nazi U-boat, and the frigid waters of the North Atlantic became a grave. Those four chaplains gave up their life vests, giving their lives so that others might live to protect America and Greenland,” the narrator said in the video that was created by Securing American Greatness, a pro-Trump dark money group that was formed during the 2024 presidential election.

The 90-second video, which showcases clips of Greenland and footage from World War II, said that Americans and Greenlanders “stood as sentinels at the top of the world,” but nowadays, the world’s largest island, whose foreign affairs are overseen by Denmark, is faced with new “threats” from Russia’s “aggression” and China’s “expansion.”

“Our shared legacy lives on in every joint mission, every Arctic patrol, every partnership forged in the shadow of melting ice and rising tensions, this is not just history,” the narrator says. “It is destiny. Now is the time to stand together again, for peace, for security, for the future. America stands with Greenland.” "

Trump's antagonism doing only harm to anyone hoping for more cooperation w/ Greenland

Vance did his best (which also isn't very good) to pretend Trump was saying different things

... though that idiocy doesn't match his -completely- pointless & only harmful antagonism of Canada

As soon as Trump is done punishing Maine for allowing a couple of transgender kids to play on girls teams. He has plans to visit Greenland and hand out paper towels because he heard they had a wicked snowstorm this winter.

If the USA wants to protect Greenland why don’t they make a deal with them? Greenland can join NATO and the USA gets to protect Greenland.

Isn't Denmark a member of NATO?

Denmark failed to achieve 2% spending on defense as required by the NATO treaty for the majority of the last decade. It has therefore willingly abrogated the treaty and forfeit the right to receive protection from other NATO members.

Also factually incorrect. Danish military spending was 2,37% of Gdp in 2024.

Now give us the statistics for any year before that.

"The treaty has not such obligation."

Incorrect. Article 3, as subsequently interpreted and formally ratified through the Wales Summit, mandates it.

So sick of you European leeches demanding that you receive all of the benefits of a treaty that you yourselves are not fulfilling, because otherwise you'll steal America's IP or something.

And you accuse *us* of being the abusive partner in this relationship? Lol

Rugian:

The Wales summit still isn't a conditional alteration of the material terms of the treaty, it is a declaration of intent.

Even if you take it as a binding commitment and failure to meet it a material breach, that's 2022, so not 20 years.

"steal America's IP or something"

We can't steal America's IP because we don't have the power to coercively control people in the US to prevent them copying others ideas.

What we can do of course is stop coercively preventing people in our jurisdictions from copying US products. Which is entirely fair.

As trump points out, we have no right to your markets. You can raise tarrifs to prevent your customers buying our products. It's absolutely reasonable for us to act the same way.

Make Europe Great Again has a good ring to it. Why let Americans sell us shit we can build ourselves if we just stop punishing our manufacturers from copying US designs?

If if that was true, the Nato treaty is not self-enforcing. There is no punishment, nor mechanisms to ensure compliance. By design I might add. Even article 5 is weak as hell. By that criteria, Denmark would be obliged to surrender within 24 hours if anyone ever triggered article 5. That is how Denmark historically reacts to an attack against itself you see.

That is why you are not going to withdraw from Nato either. No point. You can do anything or nothing as you like anyway.

Article 5 is almost as feeble as the security guarantees Ukraine got when they gave up their nukes.

Demark and Greenland shouldn't be too worried about an attack by the US Military. Waltz and Hegseth will probably show their plans on youtube or facebook before they actually do anything.

Ukraine's founding document declared it would be a nuclear free state. Budapest was just cashing in on that decision.

ahahaha, and of course, it turns out the memorandum is not legally binding according to the State Department. You just cant make these things up :D.

Belarus: Budapest Memorandum
Media Statement by the U.S. Embassy in Minsk
April 12, 2013

Repeated assertions by the government of Belarus that U.S. sanctions violate the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances are unfounded. Although the Memorandum is not legally binding, we take these political commitments seriously and do not believe any U.S. sanctions, whether imposed because of human rights or non-proliferation concerns, are inconsistent with our commitments to Belarus under the Memorandum or undermine them. Rather, sanctions are aimed at securing the human rights of Belarusians and combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and other illicit activities, not at gaining any advantage for the United States.

Vance and his wife were trying to replicate Mary and Joseph looking for lodging in Bethlehem 2025 years ago. They were not even offered a spot in the barn.

I fucking love that the European response to their defense spending being "well it wasn't literal and it was just implied that we spend 2% of our gdp".

Like okay. So you are happy being useless and are upset that we want to leave this useless alliance? What a brilliant argument.

Greenland is a territory of Denmark, which is a NATO ally of the United States. Trump wants to annex the territory, claiming it’s needed for national security purposes.

In Saturday’s interview, Trump allowed that “I think there’s a good possibility that we could do it without military force.”

“This is world peace, this is international security,” he said, but added: “I don’t take anything off the table.”

Trump also said “I don’t care” when asked in the NBC interview what message it would send to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is trying to solidify his hold on Ukrainian territory three years after his invasion.

Actually, the rest of us think it's useful even without the US.

Hence Germany, France and the UK in discussions on handover of functions.

It is only Russia or, suddenly imaginable, the US Europe needs to defend against after all.

The main problem is conceptual. We feel we have to hold every inch of territory from the getgo, instead of understanding the principles of incremental reversals of hostile bridgeheads so that peace can be regained.

It can be no other way versus nuclear powers.

A mass military approach, not a professional, highly specialised and expensive one.

You filthy backstabbing criminal little thugs. If the EU was threatening to take over Alaska you'd all be screaming blue murder about the EU declaring war on a friendly ally and you'd be right. Try to take over Greenland and you will start WWIII. Ill be happy to sign up and murder me some invading american thugs. You are complete and utter criminal thugs.

Russia invading greenland is a huge danger, but Russia invading Norway which it actually shares a border with and actually could do in practice, and which isnt that much further from the US than Greenland, is something Trump said he'd welcome, as he said about any european countries who werent paying as much as he wanted to Nato? You criminal thugs lie like infants about matters as serious as global destruction. There is no creature as wantonly cruel and destructive as the subspecies of Rugians.

Trump wanting Greenland has nothing to do with security. It is three times the size of Texas, it has resources we can exploit, and it can't defend itself. Trump wants to rape it just like Ukraine.

Of course it doesnt. Just like Rugian, he only wants to attack friendly much smaller guys to feel big and strong and yell 'Murca! 'Murca! like drunken hooligans. Just like Rugian, he wants to harm innocent friends to momentarily feel good. In psychology its called sadism, colloquially and in religion and folklore, its called evil.

Although its possible that Trump has been influenced by fElon and Thiel etc that theres money in this thing he has no idea what it is, i.e. rare earth metals, but regarding the Rugians who wont gain a penny from it, its about sadism. Harming much smaller innocent countries to momentarily feel good.
