Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
I am pleased to announce that I am appointing the GREAT Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland. Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World. Congratulations Jeff!

Denmark has summoned the United States ambassador after President Donald Trump’s appointment of a special envoy to Greenland.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on Monday that he was “deeply angered” by the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as envoy to the autonomous Danish territory, which Trump has several times threatened to annex.

Rasmussen said he was particularly disturbed by comments from Landry on accepting the appointment that hailed plans “to make Greenland a part of the US”.

Calling the statement “totally unacceptable”, he demanded that Washington respect Danish sovereignty and said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would soon summon the US ambassador for “an explanation”.

President Donald Trump has said the United States needs Greenland for its “national security” after naming Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to the Danish Arctic island, prompting protests from Copenhagen.

“We need Greenland for national security, not for minerals,” Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Monday, adding that Landry would “lead the charge”.

The US president insisted that the resource-rich island is “essential” for security reasons, rather than for its mineral resources.

“If you take a look at Greenland, you look up and down the coast, you have Russian and Chinese ships all over the place,” he said on Monday, while adding that the US has “many sites for minerals and oil”.

""Denmark has spent no money there, they have no military protection," the president said. "They say Denmark was there 300 years ago or something with a boat. Well, we were there with boats too, I’m sure.""

The newly appointed US envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, says that the US has no plans to take over Greenland, he says in his first statement since taking office, reports AP.

In an interview with Fox News, he says that he wants to have a discussion with the Greenlanders about their future.

Earlier this week, the Greenland envoy's statement that he looks forward to making Greenland part of the US received strong reactions, including the US ambassador being summoned for talks by Denmark's foreign minister.

Denmark must acquire nuclear weapons and appoint a special US envoy who can travel to the US and discuss the future of the United States with the Americans.
