The U.S. embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Tuesday removed Danish flags meant to honor the country’s troops who fought in Afghanistan, sparking backlash from Danish citizens as well as military veterans from both countries.

However, according to Military Times, the flags have been put back in place following the outcry.

The embassy’s move comes in the context of President Trump stating his desires of taking over the country’s semiautonomous territory of Greenland, though he’s backed down in favor of diplomacy after a conversation earlier this month with NATO chief Mark Rutte.

When the U.S. was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, Article 5 of the NATO charter — which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all — was invoked for the first and only time in the alliance’s history. Denmark was one of the first countries to commit troops to support U.S. operations in Afghanistan in 2002.

In a recent interview with Fox News, Trump said that Danish troops “stayed a little back and a little off the frontlines.” Trump added that the U.S. “never really needed them” in the conflict.

A total of 44 Danish soldiers were killed in action before the country pulled out all personnel in 2021. The flags that were placed in flower boxes and subsequently removed by embassy staff had the names of the fallen soldiers, according to reporting from Military Times.

Though it is reported the flags have been reinstalled, tensions between the U.S. and the Denmark remain historically high, even after Trump backed off his claims of seizing Greenland.
