Just imagine US Marines trying to secure an Iranian island with Iran raining hundreds of short range missiles and drones on their heads.

It's simply not happening.

The first clue that it's not happening is the US Navy keeping its ships out of the strait. If our ships aren't safe 15 miles off Iran's coast, then our Marines sure as hell wouldn't be safe on their coast.

Five US Air Force refueling planes hit in Iranian strike on Saudi Arabia, WSJ reports

March 13 (Reuters) - Five U.S. Air Force refueling planes were struck and ‌damaged on the ground at Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia, the Wall ⁠Street Journal reported on Friday, citing two U.S. officials.

The planes, which were hit during an Iranian missile strike on the Saudi base in ‌recent ⁠days, were damaged but not fully destroyed and are being repaired, the ⁠Journal said, adding that no one was killed in ⁠the strikes.

Reuters could not immediately verify ⁠the report.

Iran cannot guide rockets or drones against mobile targets in a modern electronic battlefield. That's why you see them only aiming at bases, oil refineries, Dubai's skyscrapers, etc. there might be a moment of minor danger as they entrench, while they are more static but before the fortifications are complete.

The real danger to the Marines are on the way in. Once they hold kharg island it's over. Hell that island isn't much further from our major logistics bases than it is from irans. An f16 can get there in 5 minutes, and a reaper can loiter for a day with a combat load.

But ya there won't be a landing until the nearby coast is well suppressed. Can't have the big ships getting hit or mined. Besides this is the backup plan. If we can't effect regime change in the next few months, seize the key oil island.

Could also be bait. If Iran moves up arty to try shell the islands from land, well then we know where it is, that's it's not a decoy, and buttfuck it. Easy way to get Iranian heavies on the move. Out and exposed.
