Why would they send in B-52's when it's dangerous to do so and there is no need for the risk?

This is like a tank being killed by a drone dropped munition, and then saying "oh yeah, send in the horse calvary and see what happens pal".

"Why would they send in B-52's when it's dangerous to do so ..."

It being dangerous to do so is his point.

There is actually need if the US is serious about degrading Iran's capabilities. Attack volumes are way lower than what Russia is pounding Ukraine with. The commute is the killer. Fighters have to fly too far and it seriously impedes sortie rates.

But my point was "its dangerous". Why? Because air defences are denying B-52s access.

So? Beyond the points made on the actual thread on the topic.

No they are not, though I am sure they are working as missile ferries from safe stand-off ranges until you run out of missiles.

You need the JDAMs from B-52s sammy. That is the only thing that will give you the volume you need.

Send in the B-21s!

Not now, but eventually when they are operational.

Does anyone remember when Obama awarded Northrop Grumman the contract to produce the B-21 back in 2015?

More than 10 years later and we are ground testing our 3rd B-21!

We could never win WWII today. :o(

Hopefully this fiasco opens up enough eyes that we finally retire the B-52. Our entire bomber force needs reimagining.

Or your whole force posture. The idea that anything on the planet needs to be attacked is very expensive. Long range is needed mostly for maritime patrol or maritime combat operations

Pretty hefty payloads can be put on regular fighters for as long as the distance is reasonable. Unmanned aircraft still are kind of puny payload wise.

Lol everything jergul says is wrong.

You can't count on reasonable distances, and payloads need to be internal because stealth is important.

The alternative is playing cat and mouse with enemy air defenses.

Hush, weather boy. Your betters are talking.

Enhanced JDAMs are more the solution as deep penetration can and should use other means.

In the current technological context, glidebomb ranges of 150 km is more than good enough.

Stealth aircraft is still a game of cat and mouse that relies on certain counters not being in play. Not that stealth is bad. It gives engagement and survivability advantages. But deep penetration is on a ticking clock. It will not be feasible against medium tier opposition for much longer.

aircraft deep penetration* There are other and better means as mentioned.
