US removes sanctions on 140 million barrels of Iranian oil as Trump seeks to lower gas prices

The US ambassador the United Nations tells CNN that the move was "very temporary" and aimed at combating Tehran's strategy of raising global oil prices.

The oil itself we go into China's strategic storage. It has over a trillion barrels stored and capacity is 1.4 trillion.

For reference. China uses 1.6 million barrels a day. It has enough oil in storage to cover 2 years in the unlikely event all oil is cut off magically somehow (the global shortfall so far is between 15 and 20 percent. China could last a decade without consumption change with 20% loss of supply).

That is not what is happening. The US is trying to divert oil on its way to China. It will likely mean that the rebate China has been getting on sanctioned Iranian oil will decrease, but that the oil will go where it was always going to go. To China.

Most likely outcome? Nothing changes except China paying Iran more for the oil since the sanction rebate is no longer relevant.

But perhaps the optics will cause a little blip in pricing before oil traders grasp what is actually happening.
