The US overcommited horribly to a rescue operation and likely lost 4 helis and two transports. There are way less intense ways to lift out a airman. We will not know until special force dudes publish their biographies (soon to be a major motion picture) in some months / few years time. That get the uranium and declare victory part of a plan would explain both the heavy commitment and Trump's obvious frustration that it failed.
