rank | Sat May 16 00:54:04 For context, these were losses during Operation Desert Storm: "The Coalition lost 75 aircraft—52 fixed-wing aircraft and 23 helicopters–during Desert Storm, with 39 fixed-wing aircraft and 5 helicopters lost in combat.[60] One coalition fighter was lost in air-air combat, a U.S. Navy F/A-18 piloted by Scott Speicher. Other Iraqi air to air claims surfaced over the years, all were disputed.[61][62] One B-52G was lost while returning to its operating base on Diego Garcia, when it suffered a catastrophic electrical failure and crashed into the Indian Ocean, killing 3 of the 6 crew members on board.[59] The rest of the Coalition losses came from anti-aircraft fire. The Americans lost 28 fixed-wing aircraft and 15 helicopters; the British lost 7 fixed-wing aircraft; the Saudi Arabians lost 2; the Italians lost 1; and the Kuwaitis lost 1. During the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on 2 August 1990, the Kuwaiti Air Force lost 12 fixed-wing aircraft, all destroyed on the ground. Kuwait lost 8 helicopters, with 6 shot down and 2 destroyed on the ground.[59]" |

Here is how it should be done, and adds a lot more context, which is always important. Here's a summary of confirmed and reported U.S. aircraft losses during Operation Epic Fury (the 2026 Iran war): **Overall Total** According to The War Zone's internal tracking, after flying more than 13,000 sorties, the United States lost **39 aircraft** throughout the roughly 39-day operation, with another 10 damaged to various degrees. The actual number is likely higher, as only losses confirmed via open sources are counted. --- **Fixed-Wing Fighter/Attack Aircraft** - **4 × F-15E Strike Eagles** were downed — three in a friendly-fire incident over Kuwait (mistakenly engaged by Kuwaiti air defenses) and one shot down over western Iran on April 3. All crew ejected and were recovered. - **1 × A-10 Thunderbolt II (Warthog)** was shot down by Iranian fire, with the pilot ejecting over the Strait of Hormuz and being rescued. - **1 × F-35A Lightning II** was hit over Iranian airspace — the first known combat damage to a 5th-generation fighter — but the pilot made an emergency landing safely. **Special Operations / Transport** - **2 × MC-130J Commando II** aircraft became stuck at a makeshift landing site inside Iran during a rescue mission and were later deliberately destroyed by U.S. forces to prevent capture. **Surveillance / Command Aircraft** - **1 × E-3G Sentry AWACS** was effectively destroyed in an Iranian missile strike on a Saudi air base. - **1 × MQ-4C Triton** (valued at ~$238 million) crashed after losing communication and falling from 52,000 ft in the Persian Gulf. **Drones (UCAVs)** - **Up to 24 × MQ-9 Reaper drones** were destroyed — shot down by Iranian forces, destroyed on the ground by Iranian missiles, or lost to crashes. **Helicopters (Damaged, Not Destroyed)** - **2–3 × UH-60 Black Hawk** helicopters were struck by Iranian fire during the F-15E rescue mission but managed to return to base. --- **Financial Cost** The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated U.S. aerial equipment losses at between **$2.3 billion and $2.8 billion**, not including losses at bases or naval assets. Note that the U.S. has been guarded about officially confirming all losses, and some figures remain disputed or unverified by the Pentagon. |
