Utopia Talk / Politics / Pixel art retro NES style

rank | Wed Jul 01 22:41:09 So, as a side project, I started having AI make a retro style side scrolling RPG. Some of my favorite games were Zelda II, adventures of link Castlevania II Simons quest (This didn't age as well) Faxanadu (so good) But, the limitations of current AI are real. It came up with on paper a basic game layout that wasn't bad. I figured get a basic playable format going test and fix etc. The problem is the game is ugly AF. Im thinking I'll have to make the sprites individually. And also the screen layouts and have AI make it play. I'm also going to have to do the music myself too, but, I like that it can give me the barebones to start from. Any suggestions are welcome for, well any of.it. |

rank | Thu Jul 02 00:14:20 It's good at doing tedious shit and gives you a barebones to start from which, before wasn't plausible for the masses. I mean, I planned to go over each screen one at a time and edit them, I just thought it would.give me a better starting point graphically. |

rank | Thu Jul 02 00:22:32 So many of the Gdevelop games SUCK. Like shitty controls, unusable controls. Sigh, this pet project seems like it will take alot more work than Id planned on to make a semi half decent game. |

Starts in a dark cemetery themed area, has a town, goes a Final boss after which opens up the top down overworld. The over world has some caves blocked paths etc and a river you can not cross. Go through the tunnel to get to the river town, complete a side quest, builds a bridge, go to the dying tree scale it in side scrolling battle to the top, enter the sky town after the boss. From the sky town go to the top of the mountain, fight a bit to a top of the Mt boss, then descend down this games version of a death Mt., half way down there is a town (hearthstone) Complete the descent down the MT to enter a new overworked a seaside Beach area with a town besieged by pirates. |

rank | Sun Jul 05 21:28:50 Ive also learned that Gemini will reccomend different AI for different things. ChatGPT reccomends different ChatGPT bots almost exclusively. Now, Im building a mini game engine so that I don't have to write new code for each expansion.Once this is done very little code needs to be added unless.adding a new whole feature. Including a big upgrade with a camera system following the character so rooms feel longer instead of each room being an entity in and of itself they are scrolling interconnected spaces. |

rank | Mon Jul 06 21:25:06 So Gemeni and ChatGPT definitely are better at rendering images. Claude and Manus are the only ones that seem to be able to simply take an idea, code it and make it instantly usable with one click. Claude suddenly stopped being able to look at images. Like creating game images that are not HORRENDOUS is a stuggle. So I used ChatGPT and Gemeni to create tile maps, sets and compile them section by section into an art bible. Upload it to use on claude? And bam, its like, I can't see the images, let me.render it my way...ugly AF. Gemeni randomly will forget everything mid chat and you have to re explain what your talking about. Like, millions of inputs daily for these models, and they still seem to be lacking. |

rank | Tue Jul 07 00:52:00 It's generic graphic creation seems ok to me. But, Claude seems to struggle with it. Like, I'll use Perplexity and Gemeni because they are essentially limitless for whay Im doing with them. So I'll use those to brainstorm the non code stuff and then have Claude code it in. But, Gemeni acts sort of drunk. |

rank | Tue Jul 07 02:04:22 Omfg, claude hates reworking it's code. I created a seperate entire art ans tile set. They called it Iron hollow. Classic side scrolling RPG. It gave me a 2 room basic demo, ok, looks good? a tad rough around the edges, but suitable. Then I add in the old game, way more fleshed out and said redo the entire side scrolling parts in this style. It literally spit out the old game with random streaks of color. |

rank | Tue Jul 07 02:16:43 The limits are fucking annoying as well. Like? You have 5 hour limits? Weekly md monthly limits. But you can't use your weekly limits all up. It cuts you off every few hours. I have used 65% ish of my weekly limits, and have 10 hours.tp use up my weekly limits, which will reset. |

rank | Tue Jul 07 02:50:46 AI is like having a personal chef, who despite you saying how much you hate French food, keeps making it for you when you ask for spaghetti. And then he randomly shit in your food. |

rank | Tue Jul 07 15:48:33 Ok, so, Im doing a test. I picked fable 5, which is the most advanced AI model Claude has available. It supposedly has multiple AI agents working simultaneously etc. I also selected the maximum effort/thought be put into the project. This model isn't made to do single one off tasks, but to handle large problems that have many small tasks involved. So I went an entirely different direction, gave it a few paragraphs and basically said to make a dragon warrior (dragon quest) and Final fantasy 1 (nes) clone. Kept it vague, basically let it do its thing. Ive burnt through 2 5 hour sessions worth of use before it gave me anything. It has updated me on a summary of what it has done. It has basically built me a 3 town, 1 castle and 3 dungeon (multiple floors) JRPG ala NES. Complete with 20 experience levels, side quests, spells etc. Now, I'll see how it comes out. |
