I will offer my opinion now that private development is better than government. If we have to depend on our government to keep up with China we are truly fucked because they don't seem to have the will to enforce any kind of accountability for all the money spent. So hear's to the private sector saving our asses! And robots couldn't get anywhere near my backyard. I live more than 70 miles from the nearest fast food place with many many rednecks with even more guns looking for something besides prairie dogs to put a hole in between me and anywhere a robot might start its trek.

Private sector funding, we are doing just fine, for reference private sector funding the US has 43% globally, compared to 18% for the EU, China nor far behind. Government broad research in the US os a good thing to fund, fund heavily and in a stable manner. Its not just funding either, the immigration shit fucks with this as well.

You probably won't find this in MBA courses yet though, it's an academic thing. Value chain - a sequence of activities or elements that support the satisfaction of some need. Say: I want a cup of tea. Water > kettle > boiling water > tea bag > mug > milk (This is linearised for text, its branching). You can arrange this chain vertically: need at top, each dependency lower down. You can map financial flows onto this too (e.g. price user is willing to pay for the need satisfied and cost of each component) You can situate the elements on an x axis: Bespoke > custom > product > commodity Innovation and value creation trends to happen by elements evolving through competition from bespoke to commodity; this enabling more complex value chains that unlock greater value. Consider screws - when they were first created they were each one off creations (bespoke) used specifically in each have crafted product. Mass production shifted them into the product space, in turn making products using screws dramatically cheaper which creates more value. But that's still lots of different screws for different products. Standardisation turns screws into a commodity, unlocking even more value by allowing more need to be satisfied at lower cost. But there are other plays. If you sell a service or product that's a complement to another product, it's might be in your interest to comoditise it. Even if it's not in the value chain directly supporting *your* product, it's part of the value chain your product and the complement product sit in you satisfy the end users need. They have a price point for the whole stack, so if you can reduce the cost of the compliment you can grab more of the value of that chain. Especially if you can find ways to resist the comodification of your own product. And that way you get to maximise profit, but the downside from a whole economy point of view is rather than innovation driving value creation (more needs met) what tend to see instead is greater concentration of profits within the supply chain. A great deal of us corporate activity is focused on value chain capture (cf. VC roll-up of service provision like vets, social care etc) where they pretend what they are doing is comodification (we have hyper efficient run books!) but actually about capturing the top end of the value chain, keeping and pricing it as a premium product by eliminating competition, and aggressively comoditising or just penny pinching the inputs. Once you see the pattern it's everywhere. China's industrial strategy is sort of the opposite: aggressive comoditise and overproduce industrially to create an explosion of development and unlock innovation. The risk is stranded capital, but capitalism also produces bubbles.

China being much more authoritarian can and does make demands of those they fund that the US can't. That is why if we are counting on government funding for US research and development to compete we are screwed. The government is either unwilling or unable (probably both) to clean up the fraud and misuse of funds. That is my main concern with government funding vs private sector. The private sector for the most part demands results and with the world economies become more intertwined eventually they will see China's advancements as a threat to their profits and adjust.
