Greenland issues ‘strong warning’ as Trump-linked oil firm prepares to drill

An American oil company connected to Donald Trump is preparing to sink wells in remote Greenland despite not having received permission from the local authorities.

As the US president renews his threats to claim the vast Arctic territory, materials to prepare for drilling were brought ashore in recent days on Greenland’s eastern coast.

That has prompted Greenland’s government to issue a “strong warning” that no approval had been granted to land the kit. “All future logistical matters must be advised and approved by the mineral resources authority – before they are carried out,” the government said in a statement.

Two days later, Trump made his latest menacing post on Truth Social, showing himself looming over a Greenlandic village.

Executives of Greenland Energy, a Texas company set up last year, have claimed that $1tn of crude may lie beneath the Jameson Land region. They announced plans to spend $60m drilling two wells to find out.

Although Greenland stopped issuing new oil licences in 2021 on environmental grounds, a UK company called 80 Mile had secured exploration rights in Jameson Land. Greenland Energy’s corporate filings say it will take a majority stake in the project in exchange for funding the exploration, though it still needs government permission to proceed.

Greenland Energy has retained Phil McGraw, better known as Dr Phil, a prominent rightwing former chatshow host who served on Trump’s religious freedom commission, to make a documentary series that will “capture the mission of these modern-day wildcatters”.

It has also appointed as a director a US navy veteran who is working on Golden Dome, the missile defence plan for which Trump says controlling Greenland is “vital”.

Larry Swets, Greenland Energy’s chair and a big shareholder, appears to enjoy access to Trump’s circle. He has said the oil project is “not related to American annexation”.

After a company representative falsely claimed at a Jameson Land community meeting in June that it had permission to land drilling equipment, Swets said: “Our enthusiasm for the project led us to communicate in a way that created confusion.”

But the next month, local people in the sparsely populated region noticed a tug pulling a barge shorewards and unloading a dozen containers. “The goal was to get the equipment onshore at Nunap Qeqqa [Jameson Land] in connection with planned oil exploration drilling,” the Greenland government’s statement said.

The Danish investigative outlet Danwatch quoted the head of the shipping company as confirming the delivery was for Greenland Energy.

Greenland Energy has declined to respond to questions from the Guardian. A letter it sent to shareholders on Thursday said: “Recent high-level meetings between project leadership and Greenlandic regulatory and oversight authorities have been constructive, and we continue to be encouraged by the progress being made toward the remaining approvals required for drilling.” It said that after those discussions, just one well would be drilled to begin with.

As a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, decisions about Greenland’s natural resources rest with its local elected leaders, who now face a delicate decision. They could grant permission for oil drilling, even though the planned wells appear to fall within a conservation area protected by the Ramsar convention on wetlands. Or they could refuse and, some worry, give Trump a pretext to advance his imperialist agenda.

The Greenland government’s statement said it “would not be proportionate” to demand the equipment be removed. An application for permission remained under processing, it added.

A Greenland Energy representative has said a vessel carrying its 300 shipping containers of drilling equipment is to set sail from Canada on 12 September. Sinking the wells would begin in October.

Jeff Landry, the hard-right Louisiana governor serving as Trump’s Greenland envoy, has said Greenland could be pumping oil next year.

Fine the company, then sieze its assets when Trump leaves office. It is a pretty obvious provocation.

Seize its assets now. Let Trump start a war in Greenland, where every millimeter has been booby-trapped by Europe’s leading powers since January. Send hundreds or thousands of marines home in body bags, bill the US for the ammunition used to kill them, and laugh as murcans realize that Iran didn’t just bleed them of their ATACMs - but their marines reputation is about as inflated as the Russian military. Piss all over magas arrogant, overcompensating machismo as reality finally smacks it in the face and the entire world cuts them off.

Oil is a global commodity dummy. You are running out as fast as or faster than everyone else.

Not entirely correct. If shit hits the fan for real we will simply stop exporting to you. Our oil companies will bitch about the extra profit loss, selling here for 8 dollars a gallon rather than you for 15, but they'll still be making a killing so fuck them.

At that point you'll almost certainly sell out Ukraine, give them up and run back to Russia. But Russia doesn't produce enough to cover both you and China.

Why do you think the Chinese are so gung ho on EVs? Because they know oil is both of your achilles heels, and they are more intelligent than you.

You import 6 million barrels a day dummy. Complicated, but different oil types give different destillate mixes. You need heavier crude to optimize refining and you need a lot of it.

China is gungho on EVs and green fuel because it plans deeper than in 2 year cycles in the US and 4 generally in Europe. It knows climate change if unchecked will lead to severe social disruptions.

China doesn't care about global warming. China wants to start a war with Taiwan without the US navy instantly choking their economy to death.

See, when marketing execs were thinkIng of new ways to sell cars to murcan morons - apart from influencing the construction of that shithole to make it impossible to not have a car - identifying and exploiting murcans greatest identitarian fears was a key move: “Hey, lets tie car ownership to their gender complexes! If you dont buy our products, youre a homisexy!”

This worked so well it become a lifestyle for murcans that are so embarrassingly insecure about their gender that they take testosterone to try to artificially become more masculine and sit in cubicles 70 hours a week to pay off their car

You'd think, needing to ship in oil from afar, that Europe would have done at least 1 of 3 obvious things.

1) have a navy
2) jump on EVs the moment the tech became good
3) build up nuclear power

How have you not done a single one? How are you guys this dumb?

Weapons manufacturers in murca exploited the same murcan fear of not looking manly enough, of course. Murcas gender insecurity has been a huge target for commercial interests for many decades. Their fear of not looking manly has been a very important factor in shaping murcan "culture".

Dummy, how has that navy worked out for you for opening up the straight for your allies in ME and Asia? Come to think, had not the straight been open for many decades until you decided to do something really stupid?

The problem the EU has with energy is the competative advantage cheap Russian ng and oil gave it for many years. Structurally, things are looking fine for once the Ukrainian issue is settled.

Expensive nuclear power is not part of the solution, nor are EVs the end all for people that dont have to keep cars as reserve homes in case they lose a job.

What we really need to do is decouple from the US economy. Your delusions of grandeur are dangerous.

Political subjugation is often preceded by economic subservience.

It will be difficult for Greenland to argue that it's not a US territory if they can't even stop us from extracting their national resources on their own land.

We'll have little green men in Greenland in 18 months' time. It'll be fun to compare jergul's reaction to his deflections back in 2014.

Why would you need to wait? You have invaded numerous places since 2014.

The analogy you are trying to create is a massive fail. Russia meddled in a civil war and annexed Crimea outright while merely freezing the civil war in Donbas. The big problem you will run into with the 2014 version is by how much local support Russia had in Crimea.

Why not compare it to my reaction to the 2022 invasion?
