On August 9, a large protest by Chinese workers reportedly broke out at the construction site of the Baltic Gas Chemical Complex in the Kingisepp district of Leningrad region, a project being carried out by China National Chemical Engineering. The incident reportedly began after a Chinese worker, who had not received his unpaid wages, got into a conflict with management. The company called the police, who attempted to detain him. But officers were quickly surrounded by hundreds of Chinese workers and, under pressure, were forced to retreat and release the man. While millions of Russians remain obediently silent — and that is why they cannot defend their own rights. It is remarkable how cowardly and helpless the state can suddenly become when it faces even a minimally organized resistance. |
